Folk Music and Arts from the Stunning Southeast Asian Countries

Why do we need to study the folk music and arts common to the Philippines and Southeast Asia in the prewar era? (Jam)

Music echoes values and principles from one generation and place to another. We can see, hear, and experience how other regions in the world value traditional music as it reflects the lives of the common people. Skylar

Most Southeast Asian music shares common traits that distinguish it from the music in other parts of the world, and this help is to develop not only national identity but regional identity and unity as well. Evan

Performing Arts

The people of Southeast Asia have lived with music even before their Western colonizers came. Lia

With more than 7,000 islands that are home to many tribes, the Philippines alone has numerous ethnic songs from different regions. Jaden

Vocal Music

Vocal music is music performed by one or more singers with or without instrumental accompaniment. It focuses primarily on the human voice to convey melody, harmony, rhythm, and lyrics. Skylar

in the Philippines, songs from the Northern tribes in Luzon, such as the Igorots, were influenced by the pentatonic scale from china, while the songs from the southern tribes in Mindanao, such as the Maranaos, were influenced by the maqam scale brougth by the Malay Muslims. James

What are the Chinese influences in the vocal music of Southeast Asia? Jam

As songs are mostly melodic or in unison rather than harmonic, they are commonly performed solo rather choral. Evo

What are the Arabic Influences in the vocal music of Southeast Asia? Jam

Singing was a vital element of their social life. Lia

Examples of vocal music forms in the Philippines and Southeast Asia in the prewar era. Skylar

Songs about Epics and Legends

Indigenous peoples in Southeast Asia, including the Maranao in the Philippines, used songs and dances to recount epics, legends, and traditions, with themes ranging from neutrality to pride and reflections on hardship. James

Love songs
