Unit 1 The human b ody 1.1 The circulatory system

What do you call the parts inside your body? Organs T he body organs do different jobs to keep you alive and healthy.

I n t h is to p ic y o u wi l l: D escribe the parts of the circulatory system and their functions. L earn that the circulatory systems of other animals are similar to ours.

H eart CIRCULATION CIRCULATORY SYSTEM BLOOD oxygen Im po rta n t k e yw or ds Carbon dioxide Blood vessels Pressure Pulse

Think about answers to these questions : 1- Which organ is found in the head? 2- Which organs are found in the chest? 3- Which organ pumpd blood around the body? 4- Name two organs in the digestive system. THINK – PAIR – SHARE Think: 1 minute Pair: 1 minute Share: 2 minutes

Unit 1 - 1.1 The circulatory system /8/2024 Getting started – LB, Pg 3 A1) A2) A3) A4) Brain H eart L ungs, heart S tomach, intestines

P ut your hand on your chest. C an you feel your heart beating? W hy does your heart beat?

Three main parts of ciculatory system: T he heart B lood vesels B lood C arries food and oxygen to all parts of your body. I t also carries waste substances that you body does not need. Circulatory system

Heart How big your heart is? Y our heart is a special muscle. Its function is to pump blood through your body. It is called circulation .

blood I s a red liquid that flows around the body. Function of the blood: C arries food particles and oxygen to all parts of the body. I t also picks up waste materials, such as carbon dioxide , from the body and carries them to organs which can get rid of.

H ow does the blood move? Through blood vessels. There are three kinds of blood vessels : A rteries V eins capillaries Each kind of blood vessel has a different structure and function in the body.

Types of blood vessels : Arteries – carries blood containing food and oxygen away from the heart to the body. Veins- carries blood containing wastes like  carbon dioxide from the body towards the heart. Capillaries - join arteries and veins.

B lood vessels run from the heart to the lungs, around the body and back to the heart. B lood always moves along the same pathway in the blood vessels.

Circulatory systems of other animals   Many vertebrates have a similar circulatory system to ours.

A2) The heart muscle contracting as it pumps the blood. A3) To pick up oxygen that is carried in the blood to the rest of the body.

LB – Pg 5 Answer: They each have different jobs to do to ensure that all parts of the body get food and oxygen, and that waste products are removed from different parts of the body. Arteries carry blood containing oxygen and food to all parts of the body. Veins carry blood from different parts of the body back to the heart. Capillaries join arteries and veins, bring oxygen and food to the body cells and take away waste.
