Course Name : Critical Care Nursing Course Code : BNSF 3101 Course Level : 3 Contact Hours: 45 Credit Units: 3 CUs

Course Description: This course equips student with the skills and knowledge of managing critical situations. Prioritizing care for critically ill patients and managing emergency scenarios, caring for patient on dialysis as well those admitted in intensive care unit.

Course objectives: Enable learners explore how to assess, diagnose, and manage the critically ill patient in the critical care environment. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the management of common illnesses and conditions seen in the critical care environment. To learn how to prioritize care for the extremely sick adult when managing multiple patients in a resource poor environment

Learning Outcomes Gain critical thinking skills to better interpret the health status of patients in the acute care and critical care environments Analyze data to determine nursing and medical diagnoses of selected illnesses or injuries commonly managed in critical care environments E xplain appropriate monitoring and management strategies for selected acute and chronic conditions seen in the critical care environment

Apply concepts of skills essential to care of the acute and critically-ill patient: sedation management, nutrition, dysrhythmia interpretation, hemodynamic monitoring, airway and ventilator management, and resuscitation management. Develop care plans for patients with common acute and critical care illnesses and diseases in ICU Learn to prioritize the care of the critically ill patient based on resources available and develop innovative solutions when resources are scarce.

Course Content Introduction : Overview of Critical Care Nursing Patient and family responses to critical illness Ethics in Critical Care End of Life Care Pain, sedation, and neuromuscular blockage management in ICU. Nutritional support for critically ill patients Cardiac dysrhythmia interpretation and management

Resuscitation : Basic life support:

The critical care environment : Haemodynamic monitoring (terminologies used; invasive pressure monitoring, nursing management in Haemodynamic monitoring ) Artificial airways (endotracheal intubation and nursing management during intubation ) Mechanical ventilation management . Care for a patient on dialysis

Pathologic conditions : Protocols and guidelines for critical care pertaining specific conditions: prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP ) prevention of pressure sores in ICU management of patients with Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) Stroke management protocol Traumatic brain injury management protocol

Methods of Assessment Progressive Assessment 40%: Final theory examination 30% Practical examination 30%
