Greetings and Using Polite Expressions

To show politeness and respect toward people you often see or interact with, greet or say to them:

These words show respect and consideration for the people around us. You can show kindness and respect for other people’s feelings by speaking politely to them.

Good Afternoon!

Good Evening!

When you want to know how a person is doing say: Hi!

Hello! How have you been?

Before leaving the house or after talking with your friends, say: Good-bye!

Nice to see you!

When making a request to somebody, use polite expressions such as:

Please You say “ please” when you ask someone for help.

May I borrow?

May I Borrow…? You say “ May I borrow…?” when you want to borrow something.

May I Help You? You say “ May I help you? ” when you want to help others.

May I help you, Lola? Yes, you may. Thank you.

May I go to the bathroom, Teacher? Yes, you may.

May I Go Out? You say “ May I go out?” when you want to leave the room.

When you hurt someone else’s feelings or cause him or her harm, you should say: I am sorry. Please forgive me.

I apologize.

I Am Sorry You say “ I am sorry” when you hurt someone or did something wrong.

When you would like to pass in a crowded hallway, or when there are people blocking your way, say in a gentle manner:

Excuse me. May I pass? Yes, you may.

Excuse Me. May I Pass? You say “ Excuse me. May I pass? ” when you want to pass between two persons.

Whenever you receive a gift, a kind word, or someone shows kindness to you, say:

Thank You and You Are Welcome You say “ Thank you” when you receive something. You also thank someone when he or she does something. You say “ You are welcome ” when somebody thanks you.
