CA Required to score at least 50% to be allowed to write exams according to GAR. Average of the 4 constitutes final CA mark Persistent failure will attract Chairman’s warning , Dean’s warning and VC………….OUT!!! Missed CA test?? Unless there are life threatening extenuating circumstances a mark of zero will be given If unwell bring sick note from a recognised MEDICAL DOCTOR

Final Exams PG3M/03 (Chempath and Immunology) 20MCQ Chempath + 20MCQs immunology Choice of 2 from 4 essay questions for each Dept PG3M/80 (Chempath and Immunology) Normally compulsory questions/data Interpretation Other Med Micro + Haematology Histopathology + Forensic Pathology

Exam Outcomes <30% Fail: Discontinue 30- 39% Fail: Allowed to apply to repeat 40-49% Fail: Supplementary Exam 50- 64% Pass 65 – 74% Merit 75%+ Distinction

Almost impossible to be allowed to write supp as first attempt

INTRO: Chemical Pathology/Clinical Chemistry/Clinical Biochemistry Incorporates Aspects Of: Physiology Chemistry Biochemistry

CHEMPATH Analysis of Individual Constituents in Body Fluids that Provides Information Regarding the Function or Integrity of a Tissue, Organ or Organ System Efficacy of a Test Depends on Specificity and Sensitivity to Detect Pathological Change

PURPOSE OF CHEM PATH TESTS To Measure/Detect Levels of Substances that Have Biological Function (Glucose, Calcium) Non-functional Metabolites/Waste Products (Urea/Creatinine) Substances that Indicate Cell Damage or Disease (ALT, CKMB) Drugs Or Toxic Substances (Digoxin/ Carbon Monoxide)

Clinical Chemistry Laboratory Organization Core Lab Facility Found at Virtually All Hospitals Operates 24/7 to Provide the Essential Most Requested Tests Highly Automated Environment Spectrophotometric Analysis Mostly Instruments with Multi-analyte Capabilities

Clinical Chemistry Laboratory Organization Special Chemistry Less Frequently Ordered Tests Labour Intensive and Often Manual Methods Generally Non-stat Tests (Result Not Required Immediately)

Analytical Procedures/Methods Too Numerous To Cover! Spectrometry Photometry Fluorometry Nephelometry Electrophoresis Immunoassay Chromatography

Workflow in Clinical Laboratory

Urine specimen containers

Blood Collection Tubes
