Introduction to Research 1

Objectives By the end of the session the student should be able to: Describe the overview of health research Describe the meaning of research List the purpose of research Describe the characteristics of research Describe the components of a research proposal

Some Questions in Health System 3

Introduction “Without data you’re just another person with an opinion” W. Edwards Deming 4

Meaning of Research 5

Definition 6

Purposes of Research 9

PURPOSES OF RESEARCH Generation of new knowledge Improve understanding Comparing best practices Generalization/prediction Helping with decision making

12

A research proposal is your PLAN It describes in detail your study Decisions about your study are based on the quality of the proposal Approvals to proceed by the Institutional Review Board What is a research proposal? 13

Importance of a research proposal? Contract between you and your committee Serves to protect the student Demanding additional requirements Protects the committee from the student From delivering a degree of poor quality 14

Components of proposal Title / title page Preliminary parts Table of contents Abstract List of acronyms / abbreviations Operational definitions Chapter 1 Introduction/Background Problem Statement Purpose of the Study Study Objectives Research Questions Justification of the study Significance of the study

Components of proposal … continued 16

Title  Not more than 20 words Should clearly reflect scope and content of study what is to be studied the study subjects to be studied where the study is going to take place Dependent & independent variables Usually reflective of the general objective Ensure all specific objectives are encompassed within title May include the study design Avoid abbreviations in title 17

Title Specific Interesting Precise Unique, should not be misleading. 18

Examples of titles Attitude and response of indian dentists about corona (Covid-19) infection Factors Associated With Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Series Completion Among Adolescents More examples 19

Choosing a Research Topic

Research Topic or a Problem A topic is the main organizing principle guiding the preparation of a research report Topics offer us an occasion for writing and a focus that governs what we want to say. Topics represent the core subject matter of scholarly communication

How to Begin Do not expect choosing a topic for research project to be a quick or easy task! You should be thinking about it right from the start of this course (at least right from now).

CHOOSING A RESEARCH TOPIC THERE ARE 3 SCENARIOS Your supervisor /department can provide you with a general topic area from which you study a particular aspect; provide you with a list of possible topics to choose from; or, leave it up to you to choose a topic and you only have to obtain the permission to write about it before beginning your investigation.

CHOOSING A RESEARCH TOPIC how to approach your chosen topic Step 1: Understand what the topic is about. What are the key words in the question/topic? Which questions am I going to answer? Which sphere of knowledge does it cover? What variables will be considered? Etc. etc.

CHOOSING A RESEARCH TOPIC how to approach your chosen topic Step 2: Review related literature to help refine how you will approach the topic and finding a way to analyze it. Focus on identifying sources (literature) that support as well as refute this position a. Has anybody written about this? b. If yes, what is it about specifically? c. If no, what gap is my study filling in?

CHOOSING A RESEARCH TOPIC CAUTION : It is ok to review related literature to help refine how you will approach analyzing a topic, and then discover that the topic is not all that interesting after all. In that case, you can choose another topic. Do not wait too long to make a switch, and Be sure to consult with your supervisor first .

GENERATING RESEARCH TOPICS where, when & how Usually, students ask “How do I choose a topic?” If you lack ideas, or wish to gain focus, PERFORM some or all of the following ACTIVITIES/strategies:

Origins of research question (1) Literature Read extensively to identify and refine the research question – identify knowledge gaps Read to identify methods that can be used Being alert to new ideas and techniques Conferences where recent work can be accessed New techniques New policies, guidelines 29

Origins of research question (2) Keeping the imagination roaming Everyday practice e.g. your workplace, practical health research placements, etc Theories Mechanism of action of drug / disease mechanism etc Courses/ readings, Libraries, current journals in your subject discipline, online media sources Consult experienced mentors in the areas of interest 30
