What is OST? Self study project undertaken by students joining CHRIST SBM MBA program The project: Is to be done ON-SITE In a manufacturing firm Firm revenue should be Rs. 100 crores or above Course Name and Code: MBA181 Organization Structure Training Grading: 2 credits, 100 marks OST Project to be carried out before reporting to the campus for regular classes

Why OST? Sets the stage for your MBA program at SBM Help students gain insight into how business organizations function Experience and observe how businesses coordinate their activities to achieve business goals Interaction with assigned faculty Especially helpful for those who do not have prior work experience Connect with business managers Learn business language Observe and understand business processes

OST Course Objectives (CO) To familiarize the students joining the MBA program with the essentials of how a business establishment functions . To identify specific business practices in the company and the industry in which that company operates. To analyze the key problems / challenges faced by the company and geography / industry in which the company operates. To understand the requirements of presenting one’s work to an audience To enable students to prepare a report in an appropriate manner and style

OST Course Learning Outcomes (CLO) Identify the essential details and characteristics of the business organization and the industry it operates in. Examine the organizational structure and functions in a business organization Appraise the business organization using the SWOT framework Examine OST project information to present to an audience Explain information in the report in the appropriate manner and style

Action required from you Part 1 Identify OST company (manufacturing firm with atleast INR 100 crores turnover) Part 4 Take the OST quiz (when on campus) Part 2 Complete OST report as per format Submission due when on campus Part 3 OST presentation (when on campus) For Part 1, initiate action immediately after the briefing session These are due after reporting to campus

Actions required from (OST Part 1) Identify a manufacturing firm with revenue / turnover of INR 100 crores or over If the firm is a reputed organization with turnover lesser than Rs. 100 crores, get approval from the assigned faculty mentor for the proposed OST organization Company of this revenue size should ideally have departments such as Human Resources (HR), Production, Marketing, Finance, and Information Technology. Obtain email or hardcopy approval from company for carrying OST Conduct study for 20 - 30 days onsite Maintain weekly report of your work (department visited, persons met, observation, activities, reports reviewed) Obtain completion certificate at the end of the project Stay in touch with your faculty mentor through the process Get started immediately after this briefing session! All action to be completed before reporting to campus for regular classes.

OST Report (Part 2) You are required to submit the OST report when on campus to attend regular classes The report submission date would be around the week of 24-29, 2024 - the exact date will be communicated to you Your report should not exceed 30 pages (including title page, appendix) Do start working on your report as you progress through the OST (even before you report to campus !) When on campus for regular classes, you may consult your mentor for clarifications on the report preparation

What topics should my report include? Organization’s history Profile of the product Mission, objectives and strategies of the organization Organization chart - Design & Structure Policies and procedures followed Functions of various departments and their managers SWOT analysis of the organization Key Result Areas (KRAs) of the organization Significant factors for success System of accounting followed Product promotional measures Career planning and promotion policy of employees Training measures System followed for purchase of materials HRD measures (including welfare measures) Manpower planning Performance appraisal system Financial highlights during the last three years Future plans for growth of the organization Views of managers at various levels and non-managerial staff by detailed interaction. Advantages and drawbacks of the organization structure Recommendations to overcome the drawbacks. Modifications, if any, to the organization structure.

OST Completion Certificate (Part 3) – 10 marks

OST Presentation (Part 4) You are expected make a power point presentation (8 – 10 minutes) summarizing the report and your learning The presentations will happen during group mentoring sessions when you are on campus for regular classes The presentation dates are likely to be around week of 24-29, June 2024 (the exact date will be communicated later) Keep you presentation to about 8-10 slides

OST Presentation (Part 5) OST quiz will be help during Trimester 1 (tentatively between July 1-6, 2024) The date for the quiz will be announced later The quiz will be MCQ format MCQ will be from MOOC and OST Report

How many hours do I need to spend for the OST You are expected to spend a MINIMUM of 20 working days and about 80 hours in the company premises as part of your OST project. How will the OST benefit me? This OST will allow you to gain knowledge about real world business practices by focusing on a specific company and how it operates to achieve its business goals. This is a mandatory credit course and the marks will reflect in your MBA program transcript. Can I carry out the OST on virtual/remote mode? NO. The OST is an onsite project and requires you to spend time in-person at the company. Should I interview managers / employees as part of my OST? Yes. Do spend time with your industry mentor and company employees to understand the business, organization structure, policies, processes and ways of working.

Who do I contact for any support / guidance Please contact your faculty mentor for any help. I am working in company, can I do OST in the same company? No. You should take up a different company for your OST project. Can I do OST in a financial or IT services company? No. OST should be undertaken only in a manufacturing company. Is there a resource I can use to find the list of manufacturing companies You may be familiar with the manufacturing firms located in and around your city/town. I am currently working, how do I take up OST? You are expected to submit resignation on getting admitted to the MBA program and take up the OST as early as possible to complete it before reporting to the campus on the program start date I am currently studying, how do I do OST? Plan your week/day/time such that you are able to devote certain days of the week for progressing with the OST project. I already have work experience (of 1/2/3 or more years) in the industry. Do I need to do OST? YES. The OST Project is a mandatory course work for all students of the SBM MBA program. I already have a report, based on my UG course work. Can I use the same study to complete the OST report? No. The OST has to be carried out afresh and your prior UG project work cannot be submitted for OST.

Company is asking for a letter from the college, where can I get it? Yes. You will get a standard letter format from SBM as part of the joining kit that will be emailed to you. Alternately you can reach out to the MBA office for the letter. If the company requires a custom letter addressed specifically to them, contact MBA office with the required format. I already have work experience (of 1/2/3 or more years) in the industry. Do I need to do OST? YES. The OST Project is a mandatory course work for all students of the SBM MBA program.
