Introduction A science fiction story by American writer Isaac Asimov It is about computerised home schooling, and what children miss out on by not being in school together. The setting of the story is in the future when perhaps, there will be no school, no books.

Theme The main theme in the short story ‘The Fun They Had’ by Isaac Asimov is that of education . Future of education which will become increasingly computerised and estranged from social interactions . The author’s message is one of warning against the dangers of computerised homeschooling which deprives children of the benefits of the personal interactions between students and teachers, which help them develop social skills .

Recapitulation Tommy found an old book with yellow, crinkly pages in his attic. The real book with words that stood still surprised Tommy and Margie. They were amused to see that content did not change even when they finished reading. Tommy declared that real books with limited content are inferior to e-books with rich content. Margie was not at all impressed to hear that the book was about school.
Recapitulation She was given test after test and her performance went from bad to worse. Margie’s mother called the County Inspector to check on the Geography sector. Margie hoped that the Geography sector would be removed from her school. To her disappointment, the problem was rectified by slowing it down. Margie wanted to read the real book with Tommy for sometime.
Recapitulation She was surprised to hear that school was a special building back then. She was surprised to hear about human teacher. She felt that all the children of the locality learning and playing together must have been amazing.
Comprehension Why did Tommy look at Margie with ‘superior eyes’? Key Points : Margie felt it strange when Tommy told her that the ‘real book’ was about school. She asked him why anyone would write about school. She hated school and couldn’t believe that someone would like school and she thought it would be boring. So Tommy looked at her with superior eyes and explained that the school of olden days was not like their school. He further explained that the book was about the kind of old school that existed centuries ago.
Comprehension What new information did Margie get about teacher of old school? Key Points : Tommy felt privileged because he knew about old school and Margie did not know anything about it. Margie felt hurt as she had no idea about the school people had that long ago. She read the book over Tommy’s shoulder for a while and remarked that they had a teacher back then also. Tommy told her that they had a teacher but that wasn’t a ‘regular teacher’ but a man.
Comprehension Why did Margie feel that old school might have been fun? Key Points : It was difficult for Margie to believe that centuries ago people had a special building for school. She was all the more surprised that they had a human teacher and all the children of the neighbourhood went to school to study. Though it felt strange, Margie felt that it would have been fun because, all the children sat together and learned the same thing at the same time. She felt that it would have been a great experience to sit together in a classroom, go home together and help one another in doing homework.
