Shapes

Types of Triangles

What Is a Triangle? a 2D shape a 3-sided shape all its sides are straight has 3 interior angles* that add up to 180 o *the angles inside the shape

Equilateral Triangle Do you think you know any properties of equilateral triangles? What do you think equilateral means? Has 3 equal sides. All its interior angles are the same. If the angles in a triangle add up to 180º, what must each interior angle in an equilateral triangle be? 60º

Isosceles Triangle Do you think you know any properties of isosceles triangles? They have 2 equal sides. They have 2 interior angles that are the same. These are called the base angles.

Scalene Triangle Do you think you know any properties of scalene triangles? All of its sides are different lengths. All of its interior angles are different – but they still add up to 180º. 80º 40º 60º

Right-Angled Triangle Do you think you know any properties of right-angled triangles? The other two angles will add up to 90º a d One of the angles is a right angle = 90º. 90º The longest side of a right-angled triangle is called the hypotenuse. hypotenuse

Can You Identify These Triangles? Do you think you know any properties of right-angled triangles? scalene right-angled isosceles equilateral equilateral right-angled

What Am I? Each of my interior angles measure 60º. What am I? I am an equilateral triangle. I am the longest side of a right-angled triangle. What am I? I am the hypotenuse. The lengths of all my three sides are different. What am I? I am a scalene triangle. My interior angles measure 43 o , 65 o and 72 o . What am I? I am a scalene triangle. I have 2 equal sides and 2 equal angles. What am I? I am an isosceles triangle.

Types of Quadrilaterals

What Is a Quadrilateral? a 2D shape all of its sides are straight has 4 interior angles that add up to 360° a 4-sided shape

Square Do you know what the properties of a square are? All sides are of equal length. Opposite sides are parallel. All interior angles are equal. If the interior angles of a quadrilateral add up to 360°, what must each interior angle of a square be? Each angle is a right angle of 90°.

Rectangle Do you know what the properties of a rectangle are? Opposite sides are parallel and of equal length. Every angle is a right angle (90°). Squares can be classified as rectangles, but not all rectangles can be classified as squares. Can you explain why? A rectangle has opposite sides of equal length and has four 90° angles. A square has opposite sides of equal length and four 90° angles. However, in a square, all of the sides are of equal length.

Rhombus Do you know what the properties of a rhombus are? All 4 sides are of equal length. Diagonally opposite angles are equal. 2 angles are acute and 2 are obtuse. Opposite sides are parallel. Diagonals bisect each other at right angles. What other name could be given to a rhombus? A parallelogram.

Parallelogram Do you know what the properties of a parallelogram are? A rhombus is a type of parallelogram. Which property means that not all parallelograms are rhombuses? In a rhombus, all of the sides are equal. It has 2 pairs of equal parallel sides. Diagonally opposite angles are equal. 2 angles are acute and 2 are obtuse.

Trapezium Do you know what the properties of a trapezium are? Has 1 pair of parallel sides.

Kite Has 2 pairs of equal, adjacent sides. Diagonals bisect each other at right angles. 1 pair of opposite angle are equal. Do you know what the properties of a kite are?

Area of Squares and Rectangles

If we know the length and the width of a rectangle or square, we can calculate its area. 4cm 5cm Calculating Area in cm² 4cm × 5cm = 20 square centimetres We write this as 20cm² What is the other multiplication we could do to find the area? 5cm × 4cm = 20cm² Area = 20cm² Area = l x w (units 2 )

Calculate the area of this shape. 5cm 6cm Calculating Area in cm² 5cm × 6cm = 30cm² or 6cm × 5cm = 30cm² Area = 30cm² Area = l x w (units 2 )

Calculating Area in m² Calculate the area of this shape. 7m 3m 7m × 3m = 21m² or 3m × 7m = 21m² Area = 21m²

Calculating Area in m² Brody thinks the area of this shape is 45cm². What mistake has he made? 9m 6m Brody has made two mistakes. He has multiplied 9 and 6 to get 45 when the answer is 54. He has also used the wrong unit of measure. As both sides are measured in metres, the unit of measure he needed to use was m².

Recount writing

Introduction What did they do? When did this happen? Who did the activity? Where did it all take place? Why was the activity carried out?

Main body Write in chronological order. Write in paragraphs. Write about what happened during the activity. Use detailed and technical vocabulary. Use sequential words.

Sequential Words Here are a few examples: Finally Later Meanwhile Next Firstly Then Eventually What others can you think of?

Concluding Paragraph Write about the highlights of the event. How would you describe the general atmosphere of the event? What have you learnt? What would you recommend to others?

Informal Letter

Write a letter to Santa asking for something you want a lot but don’t have for Christmas and giving reasons why you deserve to have it

Task:

Think about the following 1. What is that one thing you want desperately? Is it a toy or a gadget? (It could be any object) 2. Why do you think you need it so badly? Will it make your life more fun or easier? How is it useful to you? 3. Why should Santa gift you this object? What qualities or behaviour of yours can be listed to show that you deserve this object? Have you been an exceptional student this past year? Did you do your chores at home without being reminded again and again about them by your parents? Did you help someone in need? Did you work on a bad habit this year? Do your friends or classmates already have this object? Do you feel left out when they gush about its advantages?

Include some persuasive techniques (also called rhetorical or stylistic devices) in your letter. Variety is always better. Instead of having plenty of rhetorical questions or statistics alone, aim for triplets, repetition, alliteration, metaphor, etc. Remember that sentence variety prevents your writing from becoming monotonous. Use a variety of sentence constructions (short for effect and complex-compound for providing information) to show the rise and fall (mood) of your writing. Vary your starters as well. Vocabulary makes all the difference between a low grade and a higher-grade writing. Use one instance of advanced vocabulary in each paragraph to make your writing impressive. Use a range of advanced punctuation (semicolon, colon, parenthesis, etc.) to write interesting sentences and create dramatic effect. Important features of a letter
