Transmision Transmission network, the backbone of any power system enables transfer of bulk power from the generating stations to the load centers . The Kerala grid is presently connected to the national grid mainly through three 400 kV double circuit lines viz. (1) Udumalpett – Madakkathara , (2) Thirunelveli – Pallippuram (Trivandrum). The Kerala grid has grown considerably during the recent years. We have as many as 418 Substations spread across the state as on 01.12.2019. Also the total length of our transmission network is 12845.55 C km. The total power transfer capacity of our Substations stands at 20,933.4 MVA as on 30.09.2019.

DISTRIBUTION The North Malabar Region, with its headquarters at Kannur is headed by the Chief Engineer (Distribution North Malabar). The region has a consumer strength of 18,47,694 and consists of 4 Electrical Circles, 8 Electrical Divisions, 29 Electrical Sub Divisions, and 108 Electrical Sections, as on 31 st March 2021.
110 kV MANGAD SUBSTATION . OUT GOING FEEDER There are total 11 out going feeder New 2 out going feeders are Bakklam STN AUX
Tamg – mgaz Incoming Supply The main incoming supply to the station is through 110kV TAMG Feeder from 220kV substation Taliparamba in the case of shutdown at Taliparamba substation, the supply of this substation can be maintained through MGAZ Feeder from 110kV Mundayad Substation via 110kv Azhikode Substation. The incoming line was coverted in to double circuit [LILO] on 28-02-2011,Previously it was tapped from AZTA feeder.
An over view of mangade substation The 110kV substation Mangad was commissioned on 1976 August 2, in a land of 6.3acres. It is situated in Kalliasseri Grama panchayath . It was commissioned with two 12.5MVA, Crompton Greaves make 110/11kV transformers which is connected to 11 kV bus. There are also two 10MVAR capacitor banks. The outlets from the two 110/11kV transformers are connected to the 11KV Indoor panel in the control room through the two 11kV incomers. From the 11kV panel, 11 numbers of feeder outlets are taken. The new yard was constructed in 2000 in that whole equipment except capacitor bank are shifted.
Power transformer Two numbers 12.5 MVA, 110/11KV Transformers are connected to 110kV bus. There are also two 10 MVAR Capacitor banks. The outlets from the two 110/11KV Transformers are connected to the 11kV indoor panel in the control room through the two 11kV incomers. From the 11KV panel, 11 Nos , feeder outlets are taken including station Auxiliary
Two numbers 125 MVA, 110/11kV Cromption Greaves make Transformers are installed at Mangad substation. Both Transformers are having OLTC [On Load Tap Changer] and can put on parallel operation. ABB make SF6, Spring charging type circuit Breaker is provided for controlling Transformer #1 and Areva Make SF6 Circuit Breaker for Transformer #2 at 110kV side. The Circuit Breaker operates on spring charge mechanism and the spring is charged through a motor. If this motor does not operate, the spring can be charged manually. Normally after closing the Circuit Breaker, the spring will charged automatically, through the motor by itself. If this do not happens, check the spring charging motor circuitry. In case of any abnormalities observed, inform Station Engineer.
If the SF6 lockout alarm comes, no operation can be possible, so the particular Transformer should isolated by opening bus isolator after affecting a switch off on 110kVbus. Total capacity of both transformers is 25MVA having maximum current capacity 1312Amps on 11kV side.
Feeder details
Capacitor Bank There are two nos of ABB make 110kV capacitor banks of capacity 10 MVAR each with total capacity 20 MVAR. The capacitor bank is located in the old yard with remote operation from the control room. & Capacitor bank is connected with 110kV station bus with a 110kV Single circuit Tap line. The operation of Capacitor bank is done with the concurrence of Sub LD Thiruvanthapuram . Cand rem BATTERY & BATTERY CHARGER
Battery bank There are 55 Nos of 2 V, Exide make 200 Ah Planet Type Battery to provide 110V DC Supply for the Protection system and for the emergency lighting. If any appreciable reduction in total battery voltage is noticed due to discharge, the charger may be adjusted for boost charging at higher rate until normal voltage is restored. Availability of Dc supply is a must for the operation of protective system. Any abnormality noticed with the station battery /charger should be brought to the attention of station engineer/ Assistant Executive Engineer. Since battery is the most important equipment in the station which vigils the whole equipment, most attention to be given, watching the healthiness of battery preventing over charging under charging and other irregularities.
Safety Guidelines For Operating Personnel: Aware of safety rule and become safety minded. Work safely, orderly and with general care Study safety practices, like first aid resuscitations methods etc. Have injuries treated immediately. Exercise good house keeping always.
