Overview

Core Subject Title: Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions Core Subject Description: The subject covers various contemporary arts practices of the region where the school is located . It aims to provide students with an appreciation of a broad range of styles in the various disciplines with consideration on their elements and principles, and engage them to an integrative approach in studying arts. Through this subject, students will broaden and acquire the necessary creative tools that open opportunities in pursuing their individual career goals and aspirations.

Where do we start?

What is contemporary art? Contemporary Art refers to current and very recent practice. It also refers to works of art made by living artists. Contemporary Art tends to be assessed thematically and subjectively, drawing on an expanded range of theoretical and practical disciplines. Contemporary Art can be driven by both theory and ideas, and is also characterized by a blurring of the distinction between art and other categories of cultural experience, such as television, cinema, mass media, entertainment and digital technology. Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions Contemporary Philippine Art is art produced by Filipino artists coming from the different regions in the Philippines in the 21 st century*. The works reflect cultural diversity, technological advancement, and make use of a wide range of mediums. *21 st century refers to the year 2000 to the present

Characteristics of Philippine Contemporary Arts (by classification) Dominant/Mainstream (foreign influenced, industry-driven, technology assisted, oriented for mass-consumption) - ex. Ogie Alcasid, Sarah Geronimo, etc.

VACUL Used by the natives of Batanes or Ivatans Made from fibres of vuyavuy palm Protection from the heat of the sun and can be substitute for umbrella

STATUES Crafted in Cordillera particularly in Baguio and Benguet Intended for thanksgiving, marriages and funeral Some of it are now part of Philippine indigenous art

MORIONES Held in the province of Marinduque Used masks to portray the Roman soldiers and Syrian mercenaries in the Passion of Christ.

MORIONES Denotes the masked and costumed pertinent who march around the town for seven days searching for Longinus. Depicts Roman culture

MASKARA Maskara are always ornamented with smiling faces, giving rice to Bacolod being named the “City of Smiles”

PINTADOS Inhabitants of Panay are also known for having tattoos or pinta which symbolizes their kaisugan or valor or bravery

PINTADOS These tattoos are called Pinta which makes Visayan people of Iloilo and Panay regions to earn the name Pintados which later became the name of the festival.

VINTAS Vinta is a traditional outrigger boat of Mindanao Island (Zamboanga) It is used as fishing vessels, cargo ships, and houseboats

VINTAS Vintas are characterized by their colorful rectangular log sails or bukay and bifurcated prows and sterns which resemble the gaping mouth of a crocodile.

T’NALAK A traditional cloth made by a group of people in Sebu , South Cotabato called T’bolis It is a hand-woven made of abaca fibers which has three primary colors (red, black and the original color of Abaca leaves

T’NALAK T’bolis are also known as Dream Weavers

SARIMANOK Symbol of art of Maranao It is depicted as fowl with colorful wings and feathered tail, holding a fish on its beak or talons.

SARIMANOK The head is profusely decorated with scroll, lea, and spiral motifs. It is said to be the symbol of the good fortune

Local materials used by the filipino contemporary artists

abaca Belongs to the family of banana. Its fiber has a natural luster with colors ranging from pure white to ivory and dark brown. Used in making slippers, ropes, twine and hammock

bamboo Used in construction, textile, musical instruments, weapons, and many more.

buri Extracted from the matured leaves of the buri palm. Hats, bags, baskets, memorabilia boxes, perfume tray are other products made of it

pandan Processed and transformed into splints that are used as a raw materials Used in producing basket, hats, picture frames and bags

rattan Belongs to the palm family has different types such as high or low climbers, single stemmed or clustered rattan species. Used in making furniture, basket, Zoya lounge hair, etc.
