Whole Numbers are the numbers starting
with zero on the number line.

Relate Integers and Their OppositesRelate Integers and Their Opposites
Integers and their opposites are numbers
that have the same magnitude (distance from
zero) but opposite signs. For example, the
opposite of 5 is -5, and the opposite of -3 is 3.
When an integer and its opposite are added
together, the result is always zero.

Examples:

5 =5 because 5 is 5 units away from 0.
∣ →
• −

5 =5 because -5 is also 5 units away from 0
∣ →
.
Absolute Value
The absolute value of a number is its
distance from 0 on the number line, regardless
of direction.
In short:
•If the number is positive, the absolute value is the same
number.
•If the number is negative, the absolute value is the opposite
(positive) of that number.

Find the Opposite of the following integers :

b.-19
c.-13
d.|-50|
e.|25|

13 or +13

any number that can
be expressed as the
ratio of two integers.

Terminating Decimal – is a decimal that ends in zero. It
must have a finite number of digits

after the decimal point.
- the remainder is zero.
Example 1 :
Write Rational Numbers in Decimal Form
0.65
terminating decimal

Example 2 :
Write Rational Numbers in Decimal Form
Example 1 :
A class votes on whether to change their school mascot. How can
you express the number of students in favor of a new mascot in
decimal form ? In a class of 18 students , 5 voted to change their
mascots
-
Repeating Decimal – has a decimal expansion that repeats the
same digit, or blocks of digit without end.
- the remainder will never be zero.

Example 2 :
Write Rational Numbers in Decimal Form
-
Board Work :
What is the decimal equivalent of each
rational number ?
1.12-

Is – 0.3 a rational number ?
Is 3.14144144414444…. a
rational number ? Explain
