Lesson 2: Transformed by Thinking June 9 , 2024
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2 (NIV)
Question 1 What do we learn about Christian living from Romans 12:1 –2?
συσχηματίζω syschēmatizō μεταμορφόω metamorphoō
Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed, (Mark 9:2, NLT)
Question 2 Who has been an example to you of Romans 12:1 –2 living?
Question 3 What does “In view of God’s mercy” mean?
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy , to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1 (NIV)
Question 4 We encourage people to give their hearts to God. But in Romans 12:1–2, Paul speaks of offering our bodies. What is the difference?
Question 5 What is a living sacrifice?
Two Living Sacrifices
Question 6 The NIV says our “living sacrifice” is our “true and proper worship.” Some translations (KJV, NKJV, NET) say it is our “reasonable service.” What does Paul mean?
Question 7 Romans 12:2. How are we transformed?
Caterpillars cannot fly by trying really hard. They must be transformed. We cannot be saved by trying really hard. We must be transformed.
Question 8 How does our mind need to be transformed?
Question 9 How is being transformed different from conforming to the way of the world?
(NCV)
Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mold, but let God remold your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves toward the goal of true maturity. Romans 12:2 (Phillips) συσχηματίζω syschēmatizō
μεταμορφόω metamorphoō
Question 10 What practical steps can we take to be transformed by the renewing of our mind?
“So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.” (Romans 10:17, NLT)
“God blesses the one who reads the words of this prophecy to the church, and he blesses all who listen to its message and obey what it says, for the time is near.” (Revelation 1:3, NLT)
“And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.” (Acts 17:11, NLT)
“Reverence for the LORD is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the LORD are true; each one is fair.… They are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them.” (Psalm 119:9, 11, NLT)
“But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.” (Psalm 1:2-3, NLT)
