Lesson 7: Transformed by the Spirit July 14 , 2024

Question 1 Why is it important for us to understand the Spirit-filled life?

Question 2 How is living a Spirit-filled life different from trying hard to be good?

Question 3 Ephesians 5:18—20. How is being filled with the Spirit similar to being drunk?

Question 4 Romans 8:9. Do all Christians have the Holy Spirit?

Question 5 Is there a difference between being indwelt by the Holy Spirit and being filled with the Spirit?

‌The significance of the term oikeo is that it speaks of permanency. The idea is that the Holy Spirit takes up residence in believers—forever. He doesn’t just pass through. He makes us His home. He comes to stay.

Don't fill yourself up with wine. Getting drunk will lead to wild living… Eph. 5:18a ( NIrV )

Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit. Eph. 5:18b ( NIrV ) Imperative mood Something expected of us Passive voice We do not fill ourselves, rather, we are filled Present tense It is an ongoing process

Being indwelt by the Spirit describes the Spirit’s role in your salvation. Being filled with the Spirit describes a vital, continuous part of your ongoing Christian life.

Question 6 If the Spirit already dwells in us, why does Paul say we need to “be filled with the Spirit”?

The Holy Spirit is God’s one-time gift to us at the time of our conversion. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not a once-for-all experience, but a continual process.

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. Galatians 5:16–17

Question 7 How are we filled with the Holy Spirit?

Question 8 What keeps us from living Spirit-filled lives?

Question 9 How is being filled with the Spirit related to the fruit of the Spirit?

Question 10 How do you know if you are Spirit-filled?

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” (ESV)
