6 How did you decide which words or phrases to change in your paraphrased version?

7 2. What challenges did you encounter while paraphrasing, and how did you overcome them?

8 3.Why is it important to use your own words instead of copying the original text in academic writing?

What is Paraphrasing? 9

10 Paraphrasing means rewriting a text in your own words without changing the original meaning.

11 It is not summarizing; a paraphrase is usually close to the same length as the original.

12 Paraphrasing is useful in academic writing because it: Shows you understand the source material. Avoids plagiarism. Helps integrate other authors’ ideas into your work smoothly.

Example: Original: "Global warming has led to more intense weather patterns in recent years.“ Paraphrased: "In the past few years, climate change has caused stronger and more extreme weather conditions." 13

How to Paraphrase Effectively Here are the steps and tips for paraphrasing: Read the original text carefully and make sure you understand it. Take note of the key ideas. Rewrite the idea in your own words, using different sentence structures and synonyms. 14

Compare your version to the original to ensure accuracy. Cite the source properly even if you used your own words. Avoid: Copying chunks of the sentence. Only changing a few words. Omitting key ideas or altering the meaning. 15

What is Outlining? 16 An outline is a tool to organize ideas logically. It shows the structure of a text or topic, including the main ideas and supporting points. Outlining helps with: Understanding a text deeply. Taking notes effectively. Preparing to write essays or reports. Identifying the flow of arguments or information.

Types of Outline 17

Topic Outline: Uses words or short phrases. Example: What causes of Flooding? A. Heavy Rainfall B. Poor Drainage 18

Sentence Outline: Uses complete sentences for each point. Example: I. Flooding is mainly caused by excessive rainfall in urban areas. A. Cities lack proper drainage systems, which worsen flooding. 19

Structure often includes: Roman numerals (I, II, III) for major sections Capital letters (A, B, C) for supporting ideas Numbers (1, 2, 3) for details or examples 20

What is the difference between paraphrasing and summarizing? Provide an example. Why is it important to paraphrase in your own words rather than copy the exact sentence from a source? 21

List three steps you should follow when paraphrasing a sentence or paragraph. What are the two types of outlines commonly used in academic writing? How do they differ? 22

How can paraphrasing and outlining help you become a better academic writer and student? 23
