An interactive whiteboard (IWB) is a large touch-sensitive display that functions as a traditional whiteboard but with advanced digital features. It allows users to write, draw, and interact directly on the screen using a stylus, finger, or other input tools. Connected to a computer and projector, it mirrors content from the computer, enabling users to interact with software, web pages, documents, and multimedia presentations in real-time. Interactive whiteboards are commonly used in educational settings, corporate meetings, and presentations, offering collaborative features like annotation, saving, and sharing of work instantly.

INTRODUCTION An interactive whiteboard (IWB) is a large interactive display that connects to a computer. A projector projects the computer's desktop onto the board's surface where users control the computer using a pen, finger, stylus, or other device. The board is typically mounted to a wall or floor stand. An interactive whiteboard or LCD is a computer driven device, al- lowing users to access and manipulate electronic files by means of a projector (only for whiteboards) and the board's surface. The inter-ac tive whiteboard or LCD will be connected to a computer, and the computer then connected to a projector. For the system to operate properly, all three items must be present.
Concept Of Interactive White Board An interactive whiteboard (IWB) is an instructional tool that allows computer images to be displayed onto a board using a digital projector. The instructor can then manipulate the elements on the board by using his finger as a mouse, directly on the screen. An interactive whiteboard (IWB) is a large interactive display in the form factor of a whiteboard. It can either be a standalone touch screen computer used independently to perform tasks and operations, or a connectable apparatus used as a touchpad to control computers from a projector. The first interactive whiteboards were designed and manufactured for use in the office. They were developed by Xerox Parc around 1990. This board was used in small group meetings and round-tables.
Uses Of Interactive White Board The summary of use the interactive whiteboard includes three words: controlling, translation and presentation. Controlling the PC means, that you can use the projection field like the desktop of the PC and the pen or the finger is the computer mouse. Most of the whiteboards translate the hand writing notes on the board in standard computer text. And so you can see your text clearly and save it as a file. Another use for interactive whiteboards is, that you can start presentations easily. You can start and control your presentation, although you stand in the front of the whiteboard and you are not depending on a keyboard.
The Other uses are : They bridge the gap between old and new. They can improve the learning experience. T hey make the teaching process more effective. Improved Learning: give people the opportunity to absorb in formation in multiple formats. This helps increase retention and synthesis of information. Increased Participation: allows them to participate in the learning or collaborative session at a more focused, engaged level. Increases the Level of Engagement between 'Teachers and Students. Capturing and saving notes written on a whiteboard to the connected PC . Capturing notes written on a graphics tablet connected to the whiteboard. Scope for power point presentations.
Disadvantages Of Interactive White Board Time Requirements : Interactive whiteboards assist teachers to explain most concepts in effective ways that are bound to capture the attention of students. How- ever, the design and preparation required for such lessons needs a lot of time. Insufficient Training : Teachers who have not undergone adequate training with regard to the proper use of whiteboards often encounter challenges using them. This is because they find them to be very complicated and troublesome.
4. Projection Problems : The lighting conditions ought to be right in order for students and teachers to utilize interactive whiteboards. This is because some students can experience some glare from sunlight or interior lights that is reflecting on the screen. 5. High Cost : The largest disadvantage of using an interactive whiteboard is that they are quite costly. It costs many times more compared to the traditional whiteboard. In addition, there are extra costs for accessories and installation. There is also training costs incurred so that those who are going to use the system are competent enough to do so. 6 . Eye Health : Continuously staring at the screen of interactive whiteboards especially in dark areas can negatively affect eyesight by straining the eyes. This is disadvantageous as an individual will have to seek medical attention for the treatment of their eyes and that will incur some charges.
Interactive whiteboards for higher education An interactive whiteboard is an instructional tool that allows computer images to be displayed onto a board using a digital projector. The instructor can then manipulate the elements on the board by using his finger as a mouse, directly on the screen. Items can be dragged, clicked and copied and the lecturer can handwrite notes, which can be trans- formed into text and saved. They are a powerful tool in the classroom adding interactivity and collaboration, allowing the integration of media content into the lecture and supporting collaborative learning. Used innovatively they create a wide range of learning opportunities. However, in many environments they are not being used to their full potential, and in many cases acting as glorified blackboards.
An interactive whiteboard can be a cost saver as this technology demonstrates how one computer can provide learning stimuli for a whole classroom. This is more cost effective than equipping an entire IT room, or every student with a laptop. Examples of the features available when using an interactive whiteboard: Add annotations Highlight text Add notes and drawings and then save them to be printed out and shared, or added to a virtual learning environment. Show pictures and educational videos to the whole lecture theatre. You can label parts or highlight elements of an image. Demonstrate the content available on a website in a teacher- directed activity.
Interactive teaching : The teacher can call upon the students to interact with the whiteboard themselves. The lecturer can sit at the computer, with the student at the whiteboard, and the class offering suggestions and contributing ideas. Interactive whiteboards as a pedagogical tool : This type of tool promotes creative teaching and motivates studentsinto absorbing information. Teaching with an interactive whiteboard allows lecturers to accommodate all different learning styles. Tactile learners get to touch and move things around the board. They can also make notes and highlight elements. Visual learners benefit from a clear view of what is happening on the board. Audio learners can participate in a class discussion.
Conclusion and Reference IWBs are effective tools for improving learning, communication and collaboration. New emphasis on developing 21st century skills for students, the requirement for educator proficiency in technology, and research documenting increased learning with the use of interactive whiteboards have spurred its adoption. Both the uses of traditional blackboard or IWB is essential for teachers for better teaching. The Essential for Education Technology text book. - Ramachandraiah 2.
