Session Outcomes
This training targets school administrators (head

i.Enlighten them about the nature of the Adapted A’ level
Curriculum
ii.build their capacity to monitor and supervise the
implementation of the adapted curriculum in schools

1.0 Introduction
•The pioneer cohort of the NLS sat their end of cycle
examinations in 2024 and need to find a similar model of
curriculum at Advanced Secondary (A’ Level)
•To align the 2 levels, i.e. Lower secondary and Advanced
Level Curricula, the A’ level curriculum has been reviewed to
match the competency-based model.
•Since its inception in the1950’s, A’ level education harbours
similar challenges as those identified in the lower secondary
before review .

Introduction cont’d
To avoid a system shock, the A’ level curriculum review is an
adaptation of the existing syllabuses by:
a) modifying content (overloads, obsolete, overlaps,
incorporating the shelved O’level) to meet the current need
of A level program
b)Aligning methodology with competency approach
c)Adjusting assessment to focus on application of
knowledge and skills
d)Averting gaps faced in the preceded curriculum

Curriculum Organisation
•The Adapted A’ level curriculum is a hybrid of the existing
curriculum modified in content, methodology, and
assessment.
•Subjects on the menu have remained the same
•Content has been re-organized (to remove repetitions,
e.t.c) and learning focus adjusted to acquisition of skills
and their application in various situations (competencies)
•Changed to a competency-based approach in
teaching/learning and assessment

What is New?
•Rationalizing content with emphasis on the critical
concepts without repetitions and focusing on integration
of knowledge
•Integrating the Generic skills into the subjects
•Merging related content to remove overloads and
overlaps

What is new? Cont…
•Shifting the emphasis from knowledge acquisition
to knowledge application
•Valuing classroom-based assessment to build the
required competencies per topic
•Change from teacher-centred (lecturing) to
learner-centred methodologies
•Descriptive recording of learner’s achievement

Structure of the
Syllabus
Section 1 introductory part: Gives key information of the
subject to the implementer before delving into teaching.
Section 2: The detailed syllabus: unfolds content in terms
of topics per term. Every topic is organized into: A
competency, learning outcomes, suggested learning
activities, and the assessment strategies.
Section 3: gives information on assessment modalities both
formative and summative.

Implications on School
Management and Supervision
As the first inspector and Quality Assurance Officer in school,
you need to ensure:
a)Preparation for teaching: the key tools (syllabus, schemes of
work and lesson plans)
b)Physical attendance of the teacher to the learners
c)Teaching methodology: modern methods of experiential learning
moving away to sedentary approaches of receiving from one source.

a)Learning environment: honing the attractiveness and
ambiance to learning environment which promotes
active learning
b)Assessment and reporting: evidence of learning
achievement (learner’s scores, descriptive record of
the learner)
c)Extending the learning beyond classroom (near by
community or other parts of the school) for knowledge
application in real world situations
Implications on School
Management and Supervision
