Realism -

REALIST TEACHERS Believe that their primary responsibility is to bring students’ ideas about the world into reality. Believe that deductive and inductive logic, and the scientific method are reliable means to discover knowledge. Believe in the use of technology as an aid in learning; they recommend computer program to be as “realistic” and effective as possible.

A reasonable and logical way of doing things or of thinking about problems that is based on dealing with specific situations instead of on ideas and theories. For pragmatists, if something works, it is true.

PRAGMATIST TEACHER Believe that children should learn how to make difficult decisions by considering the consequences of their actions on others. Believe that education should focus in real life problems to be prepared live fully and effectively in society. Believe in taking risk in education to achieve their goal.

They oppose the inclusion of non-academic subjects in the curriculum because they defeat the primary purpose of the school which is to develop students intellectually. They recommend that students learn from reading and analyzing the works by history’s finest thinkers and writers and develop their understanding at the concept about human knowledege.

PERENNIALIST TEACHERS Believe that teachers are the intellectual mentors and models for their students. Believe that subjects with human concern like history, literature, drama and art should be included in the secondary school curicculum. Believe that their role is to sharpen the students’ intellectual powers and enhance their moral qualities.

It is a teachers-centered philosophy that adherese to the belief that the basic skills of literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (mathematics) as well as subject-matter knowledge should be developed in schools. They believed that this basic essential subject-matter need to be mastered to be able to function effectively in society. This skills will prepare them to be competent and skilled individuals for the competitive global village.

ESSENTIALIST TEACHER Believe that teachers have autiority to descipline students. Believe that students should mastery of the knowledge and skills they teach. Believe that students should learn the “essentials” Believe that test scores are the basis for evaluating astudents’ progress.

Progressivism Progressivists belong to a reform movement that opposed the traditional education; Authoritarian teachers Book-based instruction Rote memorization and, Authoritarian class room management Concerned with “learning with doing” School is a laboratory for experimentation

PROGRESSIVIST TEACHER Believe that teachers should possess a repertoire of learning activities to be used in the teaching-learning process like problem-solving, field trips, creative artistic expression and projects. Believe that teacher is a facilitator of learning Believe that there should be close cooperation between the home and the school.

Social Reconstrution Emphasizes the addressing of social questions and a quest to create a better society. Social reconstructionists believe have the power to take control of their lives, improve their human conditions, and build a just and good society. Education evokes social change and reform

SOCIAL RECONSTRUCTIONIST TEACHERS Believe that the school is the ideal place to begin alleviating social problems. Believe that research is an effective means in solving problems of society. Believe that the intellectual, emotional, and personal needs of the students should be considered in the learning process.

It is more a process of philosophising than it is a philosophy

EXISTENTIALIST TEACHERS Believe that students should be trained to philosophize, to question, and to participate in dialouges about the meaning of life. Believe that the purpose of education is to awaken our conciousness about our freedom to choose and to create our own sel-awareness that contributes to our identity.

PERENNIALISM ESSENTIALISM Cultivate the intellect and sense of rationality qualities Develop the basic skills Subject-matter curicculum Enhance students moral qualities

PROGRESSIVISM SOCIAL RECONSTRUCTION Prepare the individuals for their role in a democratic society Schools focus on alleviating social problems and reforming society Consider the needs and interests of students

LINGUISTIC PHILOSOPHY To develop communication skills of the learners
