CLAUSES are groups of words that contain a subject and a verb. They can function independently or dependently in a sentence. There are different types of clauses and each serves a specific function in a sentence. TYPES OF CLAUSES 01 Independent Clause (Main Clause) A complete sentence that can stand alone. It contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. ✅ Example: I like to read books when I have free time. The economy is growing, but some sectors remain weak. He went to the store because he needed some milk.
TYPES OF CLAUSES 02 Dependent Clause (Subordinate Clause) •Cannot stand alone and must be connected to an independent clause. •It functions as a noun, adjective, or adverb in a sentence. ✅ Example: I didn’t go to the party although I was invited. They were excited that their team won the game. After he finished his work , he went home.
a) Noun Clause - Acts as a noun (subject, object, or complement). ✅ Examples: •What he said was depressing. (subject) •She didn’t understand why he left. (object) •My command is whatever you wish. (complement) Types of Dependent Clause:
b) Adjective Clause (Relative Clause) - Describes a noun or pronoun and usually starts with who, whom, whose, which, that. ✅ Examples: • The book that she bought was interesting. •The girl who called you is my friend. • Stars that shone like car headlamps illuminated the field. Types of Dependent Clause:
c) Adverb Clause - F unctions as an adverb and answers when, where, why, how, or under what conditions. ✅ Examples: • I stayed inside because it was raining. (reason) • If you work hard, you will succeed. (condition) •He acts like it is a joke. (manner) Types of Dependent Clause:
Check Your Understanding of Clauses: Identify the clauses in the following sentences and state whether they are independent or dependent clauses. Underline the independent clause and encircle the dependent clause.
1. Naomi’s mother was out of town, so she took care of everyone at home. 2. Since she was absent for over a month, she found it hard to catch up with all that was going on at the office.
3. If you are not able to do it yourself, please feel free to take help from anyone here. 4. Have some pancakes in case you are hungry.
5. I am going to the reception even if you are not coming. 6. Although I did not get much sleep last night, I don’t feel tired at all.
7. Although they were tired, they continued working on their project. 8. I met a girl whose brother is a famous actor.
9. Since we missed the train, we had to walk home. 10. Because Kyla loves music, she plays the piano every day.
