OBJECTIVES : At the end of the lesson, the pre-service teachers will be able to: Define what is Post-Modernism
Explain the several categories of Post-Modern Philosophies
Discuss the curriculum in the context of Post-modernism
POST MODERNISM Postmodernism can be seen as a reaction against the ideas and values of modernism, as well as a description of the period that followed modernism’s dominance in cultural theory and practice in the early and middle decades of the twentieth century. This philosophy represents a combination of the following philosophies: Pragmatism, Existentialism, Social Reconstructionism, and critical pedagogy (Webb et. Al., 2010)
CATEGORIES OF POST-MODERN PHILOSOPHY
DECONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM
DECONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM Is a mode of criticism that was developed during the 1960s (1967-present) by Jacques Derrida (1930-2004). A method of reading and theory of language that seeks to subvert (bring down), dismantle and destroy any notion that a text or signifying system has any boundaries, margins, coherence, unity, determinate meaning, truth or identity.
DIALOGIC CRITISM
DIALOGIC CRITICISM A method of understanding literature that draws meaning from the interplay of several disparate voices.
HERMENEUTICS
HERMENEUTICS Refers to the theory and practice of interpretation, where interpretation involves an understanding that can be justified. It describes both a body of historically divers methodologies for interpreting texts, objects, and concepts, and a theory of understanding.
MARXIST CRITICISM
MARXIST CRITICISM An approach to diagnosing political and social problems in terms of the struggles between members of different socio-economic classes. Drawing from this approach, criticism does not aim at the flaws of particular individuals, even if they have attained positions of power.
NEW HISTORISM
NEW HISTORISM A literary theory based on the idea that literature should be studied and interpreted within the context of both the history of the author and the history of the critic.
PHENOMONOLOGY CRITICISM
PHENOMONOLOGY CRITICISM Phenomenology denies that structure alone can adequately explain language, because new ways of meaning can only be introduced through events of speech, which may extend or overturn the limits of existing conventions. Phenomenology also denies that language is self-enclosed.
POST STRUCTURALISM
POST STRUCTURALISM Poststructuralism represents a set of attitudes and a style of critique that developed in critical response to the growth and identification of the logic of structural relations that underlie social institutions.
READER-RESPONSE CRITICISM
READER-RESPONSE CRITICISM Reader-response criticism is a school of literary theory that focuses on the reader (or “audience”) and their experience of a literary work, in contrast to other schools and theories that focus attention primarily on the author or the content and form of the work.
SEMIOTICS
SEMIOTICS Semiotics is the study of the use of symbolic communication. Semiotics can include signs, logos, gestures and other linguistic and nonlinguistic communication methods.
STRUCTURALISM
STRUCTURALISM A method of interpretation and analysis of aspects of human cognition, behavior, culture, and experience that focuses on relationships of contrast between elements in a conceptual system that reflect patterns underlying a superficial diversity.
