Your Destiny is in your hands A Real-life Story

This story is for those people who always curse their destiny for their failure and plight in their lives. However, after listening to this story you will know that in reality every human being is the creator of his own destiny. 33

This is a real life story and the story goes like this: Once upon a time there was a gurukul in the middle of a dense forest in which many students studied together away from their homes for many years. ((A gurukul is a traditional school in ancient India with students living near their guru, often in the same dwelling, as a sort of family.) 34

The master would treat all the children as equal and provide them the same education. One day the master was teaching the student disciples. Just then his eyes fell on a disciple who was looking as if he did not understand anything. The master went to him and again explained to him but the student could not understand even after the master explained many times. 35

The master suddenly got very angry and he asked the boy to show up his palm. The boy put out his palm in front of his Master. The master knew the art of palmistry. Seeing the palm of the student, the master said, “Son, you go back to your home. Don't waste your time staying in the gurukul. The disciple student asked, “Master why are you saying this?”

The master replied, “Because you don't have a line of study in your hand.” Then the master called another disciple and asked him to show his palm so that the ‘unintelligent’ student could see. The master then started telling the ‘unintelligent’ student: “You see, this is the line of study. And this line is not in your hands. So don't waste your time and go back home. There you can do some other work and live your life.” 37

Hearing this, the poor sad student took out a knife from his pocket. With the sharp knife which he used to cut wood, he made a deep line in his hand. His whole hand started to bleed. Then he said to his master, “See master, I have made a line of study in my hand. Tell me will you give me education now?”

Seeing this, the master was greatly moved. Tears welled up in his eyes and he embraced the disciple. He said, “Son, no power in the world can stop you from having an education because determination and hard work can change even the lines of the hand and eventually the destiny of a person.” So the master allowed the student to study under him. 39

It is said that the same little boy grew up and became famous by the name of Maharishi Panini who wrote the word famous grammar book “Ashtadhyayi”. It would be surprising for you to know that even after the passage of so many centuries such an excellent and complete grammar book has not yet been made in any language of the world. 40

Had the sage Panini listened to the words of his master on that day and believed in the lines of his hands then perhaps the world would have never known him today. But instead of relying on his destiny he trusted his determination and hard work and this made his name bright in the world. 41

Do not believe that the lines on your palms are responsible for your success and failure in your life. Many great people had achieved outstanding success with their works in science, technology, the literary world etc not because of the lines on their palms. The great heights they reached are due to their determination, hard work, perseverance and the wise correct attitude in the minds. Thomas Edison Buddha Einstein 42

Even failures or misfortunes had not deterred such great people. They did not quit but pursued their goals with persistence and diligence. Never believe things are fated for you. You create your own destiny. Therefore whenever you face failure in your life, learn from it … do not give up. ‘Your ‘fate’ can be altered through exercising the wise qualities in your mind. 43

Dhamma Lessons to Learn Kamma is not Predestination or Fate. We can change the course of Kammic results by doing more and more good deeds. Doing more good deeds requires determination, a strong will and diligence. With Metta, Bro. Oh Teik Bin 44

Through wholesome deeds of the mind, speech and body, may we make good kamma to end misery. With Metta, Bro. Oh Teik Bin The End 结束 45

EGO ~ The Foe to Conquer EGO ~

Your ego is one of the most formidable enemies that often stands in the way of your success and fulfillment. The ego, an inflated sense of self-importance can blind you to your weaknesses, hinder your progress and prevent you from reaching your true potential. EGO ~ Your Great Enemy

The ego represents the self-identity you construct based on your desires, fears and attachments. It creates a separation between yourself and others, fueling comparison, judgment and a constant need for validation. Eckhart Tolle said your ego is your self-image created and maintained by your mind. Your ego is your self-image created and maintained by your mind. 63

When your ego takes control, you become resistant to feedback and constructive criticism. Your ego hurts relationships, family, society and most importantly yourself. At the core of the ego lies the illusion of separation. It makes you believe that you are separate entities disconnected from one another and the world around you. 64

This belief fuels a relentless pursuit of personal gain and superiority which leads to conflicts, unhappiness and a sense of emptiness. To release the ego's hold, you must realize that we are all interconnected beings, part of the vast Universe of life. This awareness allows you to shift your focus from ‘me’ to ‘we’. My friend, to cultivate a sense of interconnectedness in your daily life do engage in acts of kindness ~ 这种信念助长了对个人利益和优越感的不懈追求,从而导致冲突、不幸和空虚感。

Volunteer your time or offer a listening ear to someone in need by extending yourself beyond your ego's boundaries. You will discover the joy of connection and dissolve the illusion of separation. Holding on to your egos comes at a great cost. It breeds negativity and limits personal growth.

The need to be right, to control outcomes and to seek external validation, can leave you feeling trapped, anxious and disconnected from your true self. John O'Donoghue said the ego is the false self, born out of fear and defensiveness. The ego thrives on control. It fears uncertainty and resists change. It clings to outcomes, people and situations, believing that it can orchestrate and manipulate every aspect of life. “The ego is the false self…” John O'Donoghue – Poet and Philosopher

However, this constant need for control only creates anxiety and limits your capacity to experience true freedom and inner peace. To release the Ego's grip, you must learn to surrender and trust in the natural flow of life. Imagine you being caught in a turbulent river desperately trying to swim against the current. Exhausted and overwhelmed, you finally surrender to the river's force and allow it to carry you.

In that moment of surrender you experience a profound sense of relief and trust. The river becomes your ally rather than your adversary. Observe how your ego resists or clings to situations. Cultivate an attitude of acceptance and trust in the unfolding of life. Remind yourself that true power lies in surrendering to what is rather than struggling against it.

Attachment is a key mechanism through which the ego seeks security and validation. You attach to people, possessions and identities falsely believing that they define your worth and provide lasting happiness. However, attachment chains you to a perpetual cycle of longing and disappointment. To find true inner peace you must release attachment and embrace the inherent impermanence of life.

Everything in this world is subject to change. Just as the seasons change, people and circumstances evolve and resisting this reality only leads to suffering. When you cling to attachments be it material possessions, relationships or even your self-image, you set yourself up for disappointment and heartache when these attachments inevitably shift or fade away. 71

By cultivating a mindset of impermanence, you learn to appreciate the present moment and detach yourself from outcomes. This doesn't mean that you become indifferent or disengaged. Rather you learn to cherish the beauty of each experience without clinging to it. You become like the lotus flower blooming in muddy waters, fully present and aware of the transient nature of life. 72

Engage in activities that ground you in the present moment, such as meditation, yoga or observing nature. Cultivate an attitude of curiosity and wonder towards the ever-changing nature of life. Embrace impermanence as a teacher reminding you to cherish each moment and find joy in the dance of transformation.

Remember the journey towards greatness begins when you let go of your ego and embrace the transformative power of humility C.S. Lewis said, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less.” Also, Rumi said, “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today, I am wise, so I am changing myself.” C.S. Lewis – Writer and Scholar

May you be free from Suffering With Metta, Bro. Oh Teik Bin Credits Most of the textual contents adapted from “Wisdom Nuggets”, a motivational site. 75
