What is a thesis statement? 1 8

A thesis statement is a statement or theory that is put forward as a premise to be maintained or proved. It also tells the reader what will be in the paper. It identifies and proved the topic being discussed, or it summarizes the main point of the paper. 9

A thesis statement is a 1-2 sentence or about 30 to 40 words long. It is found at the end of the introduction, and it presents an argument to the reader . 10

It is a road map that tells the reader what to expect to the rest of the paper. The other parts of the paper such as body and conclusion gather and organize evidences that persuade the reader the logic of interpretation. It often reflects an opinion or judgment that a writer has made about a reading or personal experience. 11

It offers a concise summary of the main point or claim of the essay, research paper, etc. 12

Characteristics of an Effective Thesis Statement (Rex 2016) 1. A strong thesis statement usually contains an element of uncertainty, risk, or challenge, meaning that it should offer a debatable claim that can be proven or disproved in the essay. 13

Instead, it describes for the reader what the particular position of the writer is on an issue, or his/her interpretation of the significance of a particular idea. 14

Analytical essay implies the breaking down of something into parts, or the discussion of something in a way that it becomes a dissection of the whole. It differs from other types of essays in that its primary goal is to explain something bit by bit to enhance understanding. Genres and Types of Thesis Statements Example: The company’s advertising campaign for children reveals serious issues regarding the misrepresentation of the nutritional content of its products. 18

Expository essay is a genre of essay that requires the student to investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner. This can be accomplished through comparison and contrast, definition, example, the analysis of cause and effect, etc. Genres and Types of Thesis Statements Example: The typical college student of the twenty-first century utilizes technology in a variety of ways , to complete academic assignments, to interact socially with peers and family, and to access information. 19

Narrative essay is telling a story. This essay is often anecdotal, experiential, and personal—allowing students to express themselves in a creative and, quite often, moving ways. Genres and Types of Thesis Statements Example: My positive experiences with reading and writing throughout my childhood led to an intense interest in literary pursuits throughout my lifetime. 20

Steps to Formulate a Thesis Statement State your topic. Example: Regulating children’s mobile gaming 2. State your opinion/main idea about this topic. This will form the heart of your thesis. An effective statement will express one major idea. Example: Parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming. 21

Steps to Formulate a Thesis Statement 3. Give the strongest reason or assertion that support your opinion. Example: It is not always intellectually stimulating. 4. Give another strong reason or assertion that support your opinion. Example: It inhibits social interaction. 22

Steps to Formulate a Thesis Statement 5. Give another strong assertion. Example: It shortens children’s attention span. 6. Include an opposing viewpoint to your opinion / main idea, if applicable. This should be an argument for the opposing view that ad mist, even if you do not agree with over all view point. Example: Mobile gaming can be educational. 23

You can use the phrase “ even though” and “ while”. -This states the writer’s opinion/ main idea as rebuttal. Example: Even though mobile gaming can be educational, parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming. 25

Example: Even though television can be educational, parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming because it inhibits social interaction, shortens children’s attention spans, and it isn’t always intellectually stimulating 27

Let’s put our thesis statement into an outline 28

INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH     Start your introduction with an interesting hook. It can begin with rhetorical question, a quotation, anecdote, a concession, interesting text or a question. The idea is to begin broadly and gradually bring the reader closer to the main idea. At the end of the introduction, you will present your thesis statement. Example: Even though mobile gaming can be educational, parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming because it inhibits social interaction, shortens children’s attention spans, and it isn’t always intellectually stimulating. 29

INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH     PARAGRAPH #1  first reason is presented  shows evidences related to paragraph #1 topic sentence. Example: First, parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming because it shortens children’s attention span. A. B. C. 30 Show evidences on how mobile gaming shortens children’s attention span.

INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH     PARAGRAPH # 2  second reason is presented  shows evidences – a quotation, statistics, data, etc. Example: Additionally, it inhibits social interaction. A. B. C. 31 Show evidences on how mobile gaming inhibits social interaction.

INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH     PARAGRAPH # 3  third reason presented  shows evidences.  strongest point should be revealed in the final body paragraph. If it is appropriate, you can address and refute any opposing viewpoints to your thesis statement. Example: Finally, the most important reason parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming is it is not always intellectually stimulating. A. B. C . 32 Support evidences on why mobile gaming is not intellectually stimulating

CONCLUSION    Rephrase the first statement of the thesis statement. Do not put new ideas here. Example: Indeed, while mobile gaming can be educational, parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming. 33

   Remember: The outline is based on a five paragraph model. Expand or condense it according to your particular assignment or the size of your opinion/main idea. Use the thesis statement guide until you reach a thesis statement and outline that works for you. 34
