LINE SEGMENTS, RAYS, AND ANGLES Topic 9 Lesson 9-2

LINE SEGMENT part of a line with two endpoints A B

Name a line segment? E F G H J

Were you correct? E F G J H Answers could be: EG, GE, GF, FG, GJ, JG, GH, HG, EJ, JE, HF, FH

RAY a part of a line that has one endpoint and continues on forever in one direction C D

ANGLE a figure formed by two rays that have the same endpoint

There are 4 types of angles. obtuse straight acute right

RIGHT ANGLE is a square corner and equals 90 degrees

STRAIGHT ANGLE forms a straight line and is equal to 180 degrees

ACUTE ANGLE is less than a right angle or less than 90 degrees

OBTUSE ANGLE is greater than a right angle or greater than 90 degrees

VERTEX the common endpoint of the two rays that form the angle When naming an angle, name the points in the correct order with the vertex of an angle always in the middle. Example: PQT P Q S U R T

Name an acute angle. E F G H J

Did you get . . . EGH or FGJ

Name an obtuse angle. E F G J H

Did you say . . . EGF or HGJ

To name a straight angle you would say … C D E C D E

Time to tackle your homework . Now you understand line segments, rays, and angles!
