Fire Incidents in Nigeria: A Growing Concern By Patricia uju Illoba
Contents Case studies Consequences of Fire Incidents in Buildings Importance of Fire-Rated Components in Building Construction Common Fire-Rated Components Fire doors Sample doors Suggestion conclusion
C ase Study 1 Fire at Shell’s Gbaran Facility in Bayelsa : the facility is the most critical in Nigeria’s LNG gas feedstock project and processes almost 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas daily
C ase Study 2 Fire at Dosumu market in Lagos Island: the fire reportedly occurred on Tuesday and resulted in severe damage to at least 14 buildings in the area, leaving one dead and 8 injured.
C ase Study 3 Fire at Balogun market : The inferno affected 20 built-up shops, three warehouses, and sixteen attachments, with eighty sux traders affected during the blaze which lasted several hours
Consequences of Fire Incidents in Buildings - Property damage and loss - Loss of life and injury - Building collapse (as seen in recent examples) - Disruption of business operations and economic losses - Environmental pollution (in cases of industrial fires)
Importance of Fire-Rated Components in Building Construction - Fire-rated components (e.g., doors with panic bars and door closer , walls, ceilings) help contain fires and prevent them from spreading quickly. - They provide a safe escape route for occupants and allow firefighters to access the building easily. - Fire-rated components help protect the structural integrity of the building, reducing the risk of collapse. - They also help prevent the spread of fire to neighboring buildings.
Common Fire-Rated Components - Fire-resistant doors and frames - Fire-rated walls and partitions - Fire-resistant roofing materials - Fire-resistant electrical and plumbing components
Fire-resistant doors and frames Fire-rated components play a crucial role in building construction, especially in Nigeria where fire incidents are common and often lead to building collapse My emphasis is on fire rated doors and its significance in a building. A fire door is a crucial component in building safety, designed to prevent or slow the spread of fire and smoke between compartments or rooms. Here are some ways a fire door helps prevent building collapse: 1. *Compartmentalization*: Fire doors help divide a building into smaller, isolated areas, containing the fire and preventing it from spreading quickly. This compartmentalization slows the fire's progress, giving occupants time to evacuate and firefighters time to respond. 2. *Structural integrity*: By containing the fire, fire doors help maintain the structural integrity of the building. A contained fire reduces the risk of collapse by minimizing damage to load-bearing elements and supporting structures. 3. *Reduced heat exposure*: Fire doors are designed to withstand high temperatures, reducing heat transfer and preventing damage to surrounding materials. This helps maintain the building's structural integrity and reduces the risk of collapse. 4. *Smoke containment*: Fire doors also help contain smoke, reducing the risk of smoke inhalation and allowing occupants to evacuate more easily. This is critical, as smoke can spread quickly and cause damage to the building's structure. 5. *Fire resistance rating*: Fire doors are rated for fire resistance, indicating how long they can withstand a fire before failing. This rating helps ensure that the door can contain the fire for a sufficient amount of time, allowing for evacuation and firefighting efforts. At Mul-t-lock Nigeria Limited we produce both one hour and two hours fire rated. Our doors and frames are produced from galvanized steel of 1.25- and 50-mm thickness with special rock wool and fiber seal to close gap in case of fire.
Samples 1 Fire Door 120 (2-hours rating) Fire Door 120 Fire rated door made with special rock wool and special fiber seal to close gap in case of fire.
Samples 2 Fire Door 120 (2-hours rating) Designed specifically for wide entrances, the Fire double doors provide maximum fire protection during an outbreak of a fire. It is made from galvanized steel with a gauge of 1.25 and a thickness of 50mm, insulated with rock wool, and sealed with a special fiber to prevent fire outbreaks. The door is equipped with a panic bar, door frame, and complete accessories.
Suggestion Regulation for special building to have fire doors. E.g. Hospitals, Schools, Commercial buildings, buildings with hazardous materials, parking garages, buildings over 11 meters high, buildings with critical infrastructure or sensitive equipment , exit passage ways and the likes. In summary, fire doors play a vital role in preventing building collapse by containing fires, maintaining structural integrity, reducing heat exposure, containing smoke, and providing a safe escape route.
CO nclusion Fire incidents in Nigeria are a significant concern, and the importance of fire-rated components in building construction cannot be overstated. By incorporating fire-rated components into building design and construction, we can reduce the risk of fire incidents, prevent building collapse, and save lives. It is crucial for builders, architects, and building owners to prioritize fire safety and take proactive measures to protect lives and properties.
