Rutgers Sabbatical Plan
Extension of Current Work (40% of Time ):
•Review, evaluate, and catalog available high school financial education curricula to inform
future teacher training and undergraduate course content
•Review, evaluate, and catalog online resources (e.g., websites and YouTube videos) for
undergraduate course and two ongoing grant projects (financial education for military
financial counselors and New Jersey teachers)
•Update Personal Financecourse slides for use during Fall 2017 semester
•Work with University of Florida colleagues from NC2172 (land grant university research
group) on publications resulting from NC2172 research on financial decision-making
New Work and Increased Knowledge (60% of Time )
•Serve as a director of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS); 3 -
year term runs from 7/16-6/19
•Observe University of Florida Cooperative Extension financial education programs and
undergraduate courses on site in Gainesville, Florida and in sites around the state of Florida
•Develop/improve technology expertise in the following programs through a combination of
self-study and hands- on practice
•Create a personal finance blog for Rutgers Cooperative Extension
•Attend 50 webinars (average of two webinars per week) to increase subject matter or
technology expertise
Rutgers Sabbatical Reality
•Performed regular job duties about 35% of time
–Two of six months from 1/3/17-6/30/17
•Content curation took about 2 full months of dedicated time
•Realized that my sabbatical deliverables could benefit many
others
–K-12 teachers and adult financial educators
–Financial advisors
•Very productive 2 months in Florida
Results
•Viewed over 2,000 videos to find about 250 decent ones
•Reviewed hundreds of lesson plans and infographics
•Tested hundreds of financial calculators
