Abandon all hope, ye who enter here For we are going to talk about.
THE NINE LAYERS OF HELL!
The nine layers of hell The Inferno or commonly known as the nine layers of hell is a 14 th century epic poem by Dante Alighieris .
In this story the narrator who is none other than Dante himself gets lost in the dark forest (It is vague on what the dark forest represents but some believe that the dark forest represents the protagonists own confusion) on the dawn of good Friday/black Friday the protagonist verge of escaping the dark forest but three beast block his way. Each of the beasts represents a sin that the remorseless soul of a person that is sent into one of the three major divisions of hell.
The First beast the She wolf she represents violence and bestiality .
Second beast the lion The lion represents fraud and malice
The third and finale best the leopard The leopard represented incontinence
On the dawn of good Friday the Beasts drive Dante back into the forest (which is kinda good because if they didn’t we kind of wouldn't have a story) The story also introduces a new character Who is Dun Dun Du da Vigil who announces himself as born in the time of Julius Caesar and lived under Augustus and as he saves Dante he tells him the only way to get out of the forest is through hell and so he becomes Dante's tour Guide through hell I image something like this.
Welcome to hell I am your tour guide
How hell works Hell is dived into upper hell which is 2-5 and lower hell is 6-9 hell those in upper hell are those who have committed significantly lesser sins these people are the ones who couldn't control their desirers these are the lustful , the gluttonous, the hoarders and wasters. These people have considerably weaker punishments then those in the lower circles. But you must be thinking what happened to one, well the first circle is Limbo which were about to get into.
Screams of the Uncommitted As Vigil and Dante enter hell and read the famous line Abandon all hope, ye who enter here which as appeared in many different modern story such as in the Percy Jackson story's when Percy, Annabeth and Grover are at the entrance of hell Annabeth reads the line Abandon all hope, ye who enter here. When Dante and Virgil enter hell they hear the screams of the Uncommitted the people who toke no sides in life the people who were concerned with themselves Dante and vigil see many different figures one of these figures of note was Pope Celestine V who was a cowered, selfish and is seen as the door who let so much evil into the church. The Uncommitted people run naked in a mist and cased by swarms of swaps and hornets. Maggots and worms were at the peoples feet as they run through the mist and a mixture of puss tears and blood ruins down their body this punishment symbolizes a guilty conscience of never taking a side and only thinking for themselves .
The ferry As viral and Dante pass through limbo they come to the ferry that will take them to the upper part of hell but Charon the piolet of the ferry initially refuses to let Dante on as he is apart of the living but Virgil convinces Charon to let Dante through saying he was on a divide journey. This is were Dante and Virgil enter the first layer of hell
Limbo Limbo Is the place were those who are unbaptized or pagan resided Though these people were not sinful but they did not choose Christ in their life but they choose human virtue this is also this is the place were Virgil himself resides these people are in an inferior version of haven they live in a castle with seven gates the seven gates represent the seven virtues Dante sees many people born in the time of Rome such as Julius Caesar, some more interesting figures are Camilla P enthesliea queen of the Amazons. Dante asks if anyone has ever left limbo Virgil then details an event were he saw Jesus descend into limbo and take Noah, Moses ,Abraham, David and Rachel into his all forgiving arms and transported them into heaven.
Minos When Dante and Virgil leave Limbo they face Minos who judges those who come to the underworld by wrapping his tail around himself for the number of times they have committed that sin. Vigil disproves Minos and he and Dante continue on.
The second circle this is the place where the punishments for hell properly began. The second circle in full of people who are overcome by lust. Those who had insatiable apatite for sexual desire and prioritized it over more important things. The people in the first circle are punished by being violently pushed back and forth by strong winds this symbolizes the unrelenting desire for pleasure. Dante sees many different political figures and people from history and he even retorts that the line between love and lust is a blurry line. At one point Dante ends up crying because he talks to Francesca da Rimini who was a Italian princess who was forced into a loveless margarine with Gaincitto but when she fell in love with his younger brother but when Gaincitto found out about their affair he killed them both. This story makes the line between love and lust a fine line.
The third circle The third circle is for the glutinous. The pigs how abounded god to indulge in food and drink and other worldly pleasures. The people are drowning in a horrific slush wail being pelted by hard rains not being able to see any body ells near by. This punishment represents the selfishness of the person as well as their coldness toward others these left nothing but garbage so after life they treaded like what they left in life garbage. These people are over looked by a worm version of Cerberus.
Worm version of Cerberus?
The forth circle The fourth circle is that of the greedy and are separated into two different groups those who hoarded objects and possessions and those who would spend their money lavishly and this layer is over looked by Pluto's who in Greek mythology was the god of the underworld and wealth but in Dante's version he is a horrible monster that is part animal and part human. The punishment for those in the fourth circle is constantly pushing up and down a bolder on a hill this punishment represents their endless desire for wealth and possessions.
The fifth circle of hell As Virgil and Dante Cross the Styx on their bout were they enter the fifth circle of hell is wrathful people of the world reside. The fifth circle is again separated into two groups those who toke action with their violence and those who were passive aggressive. The people who are violent and couldn't control their anger are punished by aggressively fighting each other on a swampy revolting water but those who were passive aggressive are deep within the swampy water withdrawn unable to express their anger. This represents self frustration and the inability to control ones anger.
Dis As Dante and Virgil flout down the Styx they arrive to the large towers resemble fiery Mosques This is the Entrance to the city of Dis graded by fallen angles as Virgil speaks to the gardens of the city he is unable to convince them for their passage and they are threatened by the F urries Alecto, megaera and tisiphane and medusa but an angel descends to hell to ensure the poets passage to the next circle. This is were upper hell ends and lower hell begins
Sixth circle The sixth circle is the begging of lower hell and we start of with heretics those who willingly turned their back agents god and believe that the afterlife doesn't exist . These souls are in an open coffin that is constantly burning. Many of The people that Virgil and Dante see are that of those who were the followers of Epicurus who didn’t believe in the afterlife. Dante end up getting into a confutation with one of the souls name Farinas whose family that greatly detested his and in fact Danes family was driven out because of them this leads to Dante asking the question of weather or not the souls in hell can see the present or the future as at this point souls had been bombarding him with questions of their living relatives Farinas answers that the souls in hell can only see the future. Dante end up feeling remorse for those in hell because of this but after there conversation Dante and Virgil continue on in their journey through hell.
The seventh circle The seventh circle introduces layers/rings into the circles witch are kind of like little cities for each different degree of that sin that they have committed. The seventh circle has three different rings/layers. The seventh circle represents Violence and the rings are as follows violence against Neighbors, Violence against self and violence god, art and nature.
Violence against neighbors The first ring violence against neighbors hold those who were murderers, war markers and tyrants who are immersed in river of boiling blood and fire this river is called phlegethon. This punishment represents that these people bathed in blood in there living life but now they are dammed to do that for all eternity.
Violence against self The second ring is for the souls of those who attempted or committed suicide. These people were turned in a thorny tree and are feasted upon by Harpies and are only permitted to speak when broken or bleeding. This punishment represent the fact that they threw away their body's so they will never be resurrected in life because of this and are to maintain this form and their own body hanging from their branches. This is the ring I hate the most because I don’t believe that these people should go to hell and be punished for this.
and violence god, art and nature In this ring there are is a storm of giant flames failing slowly across a plain. The violent against god are stretched Face forward against the burning sand. The violent against nature run in circles while the violent against art are huddles and weeping these punishments represent their unnatural sins that they committed thus the unnatural environment.
G eryon Virgil Dante cross the plain and come to a cliff witch leads to the eighth circle the poets talk to the three shades who admired Dante for his work. The three shades ask for news of Florence as Dante tells them about the current state of the city, Virgil tells to remove a cord from his waist and hands It to Virgil as he drops it over the edge and as an answer a large beast arises from the abyss, this beast Is Geryon and Virgil and Dante Ride the beast into the next layer.
The Eighth layer The eighth Layer of hell is for the fraudulent and malicious this layer is separated into Ten different cities these are panderers and seducers, Flatterers, Simoniacs, Sorcerers, Barrators, Hypocrites , Thieves, counselors of fraud, sowers of discord and Falsifiers because this are all expensive I condensed it down to the punishment and the meaning behind it.
Panderers and seducers The Panderers and seducers are in two files one on different end of a ditch and are marching back and forth wail being whipped by demons, this punishment represents that these people exploited other people passions and sympathy for their own interests so they are being used in the afterlife.
Flatterers Flatterer also used people and pray upon their fears and desires and for that they step in feces and scream as they fight against themselves.
Sorcerers Dante sees many Fortune tellers, Diviners, Astrologer and other prophets these people are forced to walk forward with their head on backwards blinded by their tears. This punishment represents the attempts to look into the future by forbidden mean so for all eternity walking backwards.
Barrators These are the corrupt politicians who would make money in public offices. These people are immersed in a lake of boiling pitch. This punishment represents the sticky fingers of those corrupt politicians and the deals they made.
Hypocrites The Hypocrites are walking on a narrow track around weighted down by leaden robes. This punishment represents that these people continue to lie that continue to gain weight and in the after life they are weighted down and are never allowed to make spiritual progress.
Thieves A pit full of with reptiles were the snakes and lizard curl themselves around the thieves to bind their hands behind their back. This Punishment represents that because they stole in life so their hand are bond in the afterlife as to never steal again.
The counsellors of fraud The people who gave false advice are engulfed in flames this represents the lies they told in life and the growing flames that those lies represent now engulfs them in the afterlife.
sowers of discord Sower means to scatter or place a seed. The sowers of discord are those who planted the seed of discord. Theses sinners are torn and mutilated by demon holding a bloody sword and the souls of the body's must carry around their body in the ditch as their body's to slowly heal to only have it happen again . This punishment represents that they torn apart the very fabric of reality and so there are being torn apart just as they did.
Falsifiers In this city it plagued by disease And the Falsifiers are affected by these diseases (no duh) each sinner is affected by a different disease some are rooming around starving some are tearing each other into pieces. This punishment represents the different types of forgery and what these people did in the living thus being a diseases to society.
The ninth circle . The ninth circle is for the treacherous and as Dante and Virgil enter the ninth circle find themselves at a frozen lake called cocytus and there are souls trapped in the ice and according to one guilt there are trapped deeper in the ice and it dived into four rings in the ice and the rings go in order betrayal of family ties, betrayal of community ties, betrayal of guests and betrayal of lords in each ring Dante and Virgil explore the different types of treachery.
The first ring Caïna This ring is named after Cain who Killed his own brother. These people who committed betrayal of ones family they have necks and heads out of the ice and are allowed to move their heads allowing some protection from the freezing wind. Dante sees many different political figures in this ring.
The second ring Antenora This ring is named after Antenor a Trojan soldier who betrayed the Greeks . The traitors to the community they have their heads above the ice but! They cannot bend their necks being subject to the cold and Dante kicks one of the heads and that head was Bocca degli a traitor of Florence it should be noted that Dante kicked him accidentally kicks him but I like the idea of Dante purposely kicking him better.
Ring three Ptolomaea Ring three is named after Ptolemy who has Invited to his father in Laws banquet where his sons kill him. The traitors to their guests line face upward in the ice while their tears freeze in their eye sockets sealing them with small visors of crystal so the comfort or crying is taken away from them.
Ring four Judecca This ring is named after Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus Christ. The Traitors of their lords are fully encased by the ice distorted and twisted IN EVERY CONCEIVABLE POSITION and are unable to move and talk so Dante and Virgil just Casually move along to of hell. Speaking of witch
Centre of Hell In the centre of hell is were THE ULTIMATE SIN IS HELD PERSONAL Treachery Against god Were the devil HIMSELF is held referred to as Dis witch was also the name of Pluto. Lucifer is also held here who was once god favourite angels as his pride led him to rebel against god, As Lucifer is a Giant he is trapped waist deep in the ice suffering and he has three faces each with a different colour one red, one a pale yellow and one black Santans three faces are thought to represent his control over the three human race and each face is eternally chewing on a Prominent traitor Marcuse Brutus and Gaisus Longinus and Judas Iscariot Its fun to note that Judas is being chewed more violently then the rest.
