Babul tree

Occurance It is found scattered in lower terai , usually found in drier parts of terai, but will not thrive without irrigation if climate is too arid.

Morphological characteristics Leaves: Bipinnate Flowers: Golden yellow in colour and sweet scented. Seed : 8-12 seed per pod compressed, ovoid and dark brown.

Silvicultural characteristics Light: Strong light demander Frost: Frost tender Fire: Not fire resistant species Drought: Drought resistant Coppice and root sucker: Usually pollarded well and is freely lopped for thorn fences and fodder. Root suckers are seldom produced. Browsing: Susceptible to browsing damage by goat and camels , even by sheep and buffaloes.

Tree nature : Medium to large sized almost evergreen tree. Soil ph. Flourish in alkaline soil with considerable moisture. Root system: Young plant develops s long taproot from the commencement , and strong lateral roots are also formed early. Under normal conditions on dry ground the tap root reaches a considerable length where water is found. Associates: Associated with sissoo and khair forests.

Uses Fuel wood Heartwood Lac: good host of lac Gum: used in painting and dying Seeds : can be eaten roasted or raw Leaves and pods: excellent fodder
