ACADEMIC TEXT STRUCTURES

W hat is an Academic Text? Academic text is defined as critical, objective, specialized texts written by experts or professionals in a given field using formal language. Academic texts are objective. This means that they are based on facts with solid basis. The emotions of the authors cannot be felt from texts or materials. Academic texts often take years to publish because of intense writing and review

Some example of academic writing are as follows Literary analysis: refers to a form of essay that carefully evaluates and examines a specific work of literature or an aspect of a work of literature giving an opinion about it. To do so, the literary analysis needs to break down the analized work in it's different elements, then examine them having, as a result, a deeper understanding of the work as a whole . ​

Research paper : A research paper is not a simple summarized topics...it has a complete information about your topic...Its not only the primary sources but also the secondary too...it may be a book report an essay Dissertation​ : A dissertation is a written document that summarizes research. It is the final step of a PhD program, and the culmination of a student's doctoral studies. ... “The dissertation is often a compilation of academic and practical knowledge, and in many cases, it can be the student's first publication.”

Structure : is an important feature of academic writing. A well-structured text enables the reader to follow the argument and navigate the text. In academic writing a clear structure and a logic flow are imperative to a cohesive text. The three-part essay structure is a basic structure that consists of introduction, body and conclusion .

Introduction . Its purpose is to clearly tell the reader the topic, purpose and structure of the paper. As a rough guide, an introduction might be between 10 and 20 percent of the length of the whole paper and has three main parts The Body . it develop the question what is the topic about". it may elaborate directly on the topic sentence bt giving definitions, classification, explanations, example, and evidence.

Conclusion In the  conclusion , summarise what you have done in the text. Remind the reader what the purpose of the text was by using phrases such as  The purpose was to ...  or  In this text I have described and discussed…. .
