ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to: Identify sentences in active and passive voice; transform active voice into passive voice; and use active voice and passive voice in sentences.  

ACTIVE VOICE The “doer” or the person/thing responsible for the action in the sentence comes first; or it is the subject of the sentence. It answers the question, who/what does the action?

Examples 1. The boy eats the cake. “ doer”/subject object of the verb 2. The snake bites Mario. “ doer”/subject object of the verb

PASSIVE VOICE The person/thing acted on or the object of the verb in the sentence comes first; or it becomes the subject of the sentence. Answers the question, Who/what was acted by whom/what?

Examples by phrase The cake is eaten by the boy. subject doer of the action by phrase 2. Mario is bitten by the snake . subject doer of the action

INDIVIDUAL DRILL: IDENTIFICATION. Write AV if the sentence is in Active Voice, PV if it is in Passive Voice The girl smiles at me. I was bitten by the dog. She broke the vase. My teacher teaches me. The book is given by him.

THINGS TO REMEMBER IN DETERMINING WHETHER THE SENTENCE IS IN ACTIVE/PASSIVE VOICE ACTIVE VOICE PASSIVE VOICE The doer comes first in the sentence. Ex. The snake bites Mario. The object of the verb comes first in the sentence. Ex. Mario is bitten by the snake. No auxiliary verb is used, just the action verb (ex. Bites) There is a by phrase (mostly) Auxiliary verb is used before the main verb-in past participle form ( ex. is bitten )

INDIVIDUAL DRILL: TRANSFORMATION. Transform the given active sentences to passive. The girl smiles at me. She broke the vase. The cat eats the cake. The monkey climbs the trees.

Things to remember when transforming active sentence to passive: Identify the “doer” of the action and the “object” of the verb. Determine the tense of the verb used in the sentence. Determine the number of the subject (singular or plural) for Subject-Verb agreement.

GROUP ACTIVITIES: MANGO GROUP 1: Identify whether the given sentences are in active or passive voice. Write AV if it is in Active Voice, otherwise, write PV if it is in Passive Voice. The dog barks at me. This poem is written by her. My teacher teaches me the lesson. The book is happily read by Leon. My cat ate the fish.

GROUP ACTIVITIES: APPLE GROUP 2: Transform the given active sentences into passive. Theo gives me a flower. My brother helps my father. Her classmate breaks her glasses. She picked the hat. The dog eats the bones.

GROUP ACTIVITIES: BANANA Group 3: Construct five sentences in active voice.

GROUP ACTIVITIES: PINEAPPLE Group 4: Construct five sentences in pas sive voice.

GENERALIZATION Compare and contrast active voice from passive voice. And give one example each.

EVALUATION Numbers1-2, identify whether the sentences are in active or passive voice. Write AV if it is active and PV if it is Passive. _____ 1. Wilson writes me a letter. _____ 2. The seal is eaten by the shark. Number 3. Write a sentence in active voice. __________________________________________________. Number 4. ASSIGNMENT Give five examples of sentences in simple past tense and another five sentences in past perfect tense.
