Adjustment By S. Lakshmanan, M.Phil.(Psy), M.A.(Psy), PGDBA., DCL., Psychologist Former Counselor cum Project Officer, NYK (Govt. of India), Pondicherry

Adjustment Life is a continuous process of adjustment. Each day we make countless adjustments. Adjustment is a word that sterns from the biological concept of adaptation. A biological view of adjustment would stress the adaptation for survival, while a narrower view of it would be adaptation for need reduction.

Adjustment process The efforts of the individual to adapt himself for environment to overcome frustration in achieving the gratification of his needs may be called the adjustment process. In other words, adjustment is a process by which a living organism maintains its balance in the environment by fulfilling its needs from time to time.

Lindgren (1959) opines that adjustment is the act of establishing a satisfactory psychological relationship between the individual and environment. In the words of Norman talent (1978), adjustment is a state of life when an individual is more or less in harmony with personal biological, social and psychological needs and with the demands of the physical environment. Definition of adjustment

Definition of adjustment Benjamin Wolman (1989) defined “adjustment as the harmonious relationship with the environment involving the ability to satisfy most of one’s needs and meet most of the demands both physical and social that are thrust upon one.”

adjustment The process of adjustment makes one to understand himself, and to understand others. This understanding facilitates a satisfactory interpersonal relationship. Likewise, adjustment to one’s self is no less a challenge than is adjustment to other people. A well-adjusted person is one who commits himself to socially desirable goals and uses his energy effectively in working towards a desired end. Such a person may be considerate, likable and socially deft.

Maladjustment Any state that contradicts adjustment is called maladjustment (Coleman, 1972). There are various factors that contribute to maladjustment. Factors like broken home, rejection, deprivation, overcrowding, insecurity tenure, economically low social status, frustration, anxiety, conflict, guilt feelings, shyness, faulty attitude etc. may precipitate the problem of maladjustment.

Areas of adjustment Adjustment is a dynamic process that occurs as the individual lives in his home, takes his education, does some job and interacts with people. The various areas of adjustment are home, health, social, emotional and occupation.

Home and health adjustment Home adjustment is concerned with the individual’s relationships with his parents, siblings, and relatives. His roles in home, amount of satisfaction and dissatisfaction that he obtains from his home have been ascertained. Health adjustment refers to the individual’s coping with health problems like his incidence and prevalence of disease, pains, aches and other ailments.

Social emotional & occupational adjustment Social adjustment deals with the interpersonal relationship, his extent of popularity, his sociability, his participation in social gatherings etc. Emotional adjustment is concerned with whether the person is able to express the emotions in an acceptable way or not. It is also concerned with whether he is emotionally stable or not. Occupational adjustment deals with whether the individual is able to get along with his superior, colleagues, and subordinates. It also deals with whether the person is satisfied in his occupation.

Conclusion In the above study of adjustment in two colleges, we conclude:- Home adjustment is more poor compare than the other area of adjustment. Emotional adjustment is also poor. But we mind it that the the students are in adolescent period during in graduate level of study.

Recommendation Because of indicating to the low level of home adjustment in the college level students, further study is needed whether it possible lead to juvenile delinquency.

Thank you
