Key categories:
1. Occupation or place of employment
a. Type of work performed and/or place of employment
b. Account for PhDs employed in academia but outside the professoriate (3.3% of recent
history PhDs, 6.6% of all humanities PhDs)
c. For faculty: tenure status and type of institution (2‐year/4‐

Challenges in Cyberstalking Surveys
1. Google does not turn up every name, and seems more
likely to turn up faculty than those
employed in other sectors.
2. A small number of PhDs show up as only teaching one‐class as an adjunct. An issue for further
consideration.
Questions that require follow‐up surveys
1. Relation between career goals as a student and current employment.
2.
Connection between studies and job.
3. Experiences during doctoral study (e.g., journal editing, digital tools, etc.) that led to current
employment.
4. Job satisfaction.
5. The career aspirations of those in adjunct academic employment.
