INTRODUCTION Offers a 4 year degree program of Bachelor of Science Honours in Food Science and Technology. By following the course the knowledge on biological, microbiological, chemical, physical, sensory, nutritional and engineering properties of food commodities can be gained. Also processing technologies related to various food commodities can be understood through the course. The course includes, Lectures Lab sessions Field visits Mini project Final year research 2
HISTORY The Degree in Food Science course was introduced as an inaugural course of the Faculty of Applied Sciences which started on 21 st June 1993 in the buildings of Buttala Gam Udawa Project in Monaragala. Initially it was a three-year course. Followed by a series of exams and class strikes in 2002 and early 2003, the 3 year course was promoted to a four-year course as well as to a degree in B.Sc. Special in Food Science and Technology . 3

STUDENT AWARDS Professor Indraratne Balasooriya Memorial Gold Medal Awarded by Mrs Chinta Balasooriya. This will be awarded to a student who obtained the highest FGPA with a second-class upper division pass or above in the final degree examination at the first attempt in Food Science and Technology. 5
Professor K.K.D.S. Ranaweera Gold Medal Awarded by GTS Active (Pvt.) Ltd. Awarded to the student with the best performance in the final year research project in BSc degree Programme in the Department of Food Science and Technology. Mr and Mrs M.B.S. Palipane Memorial Gold Medal Awarded by Prof. K.B. Palipane. This will be awarded for the best performance in Food Engineering in the Department of Food Science and Technology, to the student who obtained the highest FGPA mark with a first class or a second-class upper division pass in the final degree examination. 6
STUDENT SOCIETY Sabaragamuwa University Food Science and Technology Association (SUFSTA) SUFSTA was established in the year 2002. It is the student association of FST undergraduates that organizes many extension and outreach activities of the Department of Food Science & Technology. PROFOOD PROPACK & AGBIZ This exhibition provides a unique platform to meet, interact and connect the individuals and organizations involved in processed food, packaging and agriculture sectors under one roof. This exhibition is held annually and the Profood-Propack & Agbiz exhibition 2023 was successfully held on the 4 th ,5 th and 6 th of August 2023 at the BMICH exhibition centre in Colombo . 8

WORLD FOOD DAY PROGRAM World Food day is celebrated worldwide on 16 th of October to make aware the issues that contribute to poverty and hunger, as well as to emphasize the importance of food security and nutritious meals for the human population. A quiz competition is conducted with associated to the day by SUFSTA. . 19

ACHIEVEMENTS Ms. Narmada Weerakkody and Ms. Shammi Hettiarachchi participated in the grand finale held in New Delhi and won the 4 th place out of 165 teams from universities and colleges of 10 countries in Asia at the SKA Asia Food Safety quiz competition and awarded as Food safety ambassadors by the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Silver medal for Environmental conservation of Sahasak Nimavum 2018 National Exhibition won by Mr. T. Niroshan. Winner of Sampath Green Inventor 2017 – Mr. T. Niroshan. 24
