AGENCIES OF EDUCATION

MEANING OF EDUCATIONAL AGENCY An agency of education is a specialized institution or organization that directly or indirectly exercises an educational influence on the child. This include both formal and informal institutions such as the school, the church, the library, the newspapers, the magazines, the exhibitions, the museums, the planetariums, the radio, the cinema, the television etc.

CHARACTERISTICS OF EDUCATIONAL AGENCIES It exercises some educational influence on individual. It is directly or indirectly concern with the education of youngsters. It include both formal as well as informal social institutions. It concerned with the transmission of cultural and social heritage of the society. It include both specialized as well as non-specialized institutions.

TYPES OF EDUCATIONAL AGENCIES

Classification on the basis of type of education provided by the agency Formal agency of education : This include institutions deliberately set up by the society with specific objective of carrying out the various functions of education. Eg : the school , the church, the museum . Informal agencies of education : This include institutions which perform educational functions just incidentally and indirectly. Eg : the family, the peer group, youth clubs etc.

Classification on the basis of role played by the agency: Active agencies of education : There is personal interaction between educator and educand . Eg : Home, school, religious institutions, society. Passive agencies of education : They affect the individual but they are not affected by them.Eg;library , radio,tv etc.

Classification on the basis of monitory intention of the agency: Commercial agencies of education : They have their objective of business in view but they also provide different kinds of education. Eg : News paper, radio, television etc. Non-commercial agencies of education : They are non-profit service oriented educational agencies created for social welfare and social good . Eg : Club, social welfare centers, scouting, girl guiding etc.

AGENCIES OF INFORMAL EDUCATION

1. THE FAMILY The family is the oldest, basic and fundamental unit of human society . It is regarded as the primary agent of education . The basic purpose of the family is to provide a loving safe environment for children.

Educational functions of the family It provide early physical training It socializes the child It acculturates the child It helps in character formation It supports mental development It imparts spiritual and moral education It can collaborate with school It prepares ground for future learning

2. THE PEER GROUP A peer group is a group of individuals having more or less same age and status . It is a group of friends that a certain person will try to impress to get their bond, social status, and interest.

Educational role of the peer group It socializes the individual It helps to develop balanced personality It facilitate mental development It favours physical development It inculcate social values It develops leadership qualities It foster talents and creative abilities It acculturates

3.THE COMMUNITY The term community refers to a group of people living together in an area having common ways of working and common ideals to achieve. Community is an informal and active agency of education which casts lasting influence on the educational development of the individual.

Educational role of community Provide educational facilities to children through institutions. Formulate aims and objectives of education. Socializes the child. Helps for cultural development. It encourages the vocational development of the learner. They encourages and co-ordinates the educational efforts of various parallel agencies .

4. THE MASS MEDIA The media used for the masses to communicate something are called as mass media . They are sources of and news such as newspapers, magazines, radio, television, cinema, and i nternet that reach and influence large number of people.

Educational functions of mass media Television can serve a powerful medium for imparting education through educational broadcasting. The world wide web make interaction between the teacher and the taught sitting in remote places. Helps in intellectual, social, emotional, and aesthetic development. Helps children to enrich their imagination, ignites their creativity, encourage them to think divergently .

Helps to transmitting cultural values from one generation to another. Helps to develop social and political values like feeling of brotherhood, oneness, cooperation, democratic values etc. Newspapers plays their educational function by providing up-to-date information about many areas and also by intimating information about the opportunities of education
