Alfred Binet
Background Alfred was born July 8, 1857 in Nice, France. His birth name was Alfredo Binetti . Alfred’s parents divorced when he was young and he moved to Paris with his mom who was an artist. Binet graduated law school in 1878 and planned to follow in his father’s footsteps and go to medical school. He began to study science at Sorbonne and began educating himself in psychology.
Background/ Achievements He married Laure Balbiani and he carried out home experiments with his daughters and observed their behavior and responses in a systematic approach. He was a member of the Free Society for the Psychological Study of the Child. He also volunteered at the Laboratory of Experimental Psychology.
Interesting Facts: He never formally attended University to study psychology. He wrote more than 200 books, articles, and reviews.

Contributions to Psychology Binet is most known for the Simon- Binet scale or the Stanford- Binet IQ Test. The Simon- Binet scale: It is a cognitive and intelligence test that is used to diagnose developmental or intellectual deficiencies in children. The test measures 5 factors: knowledge, quantitative reasoning, visual-spatial processing, working memory, and fluid reasoning. It includes verbal and nonverbal tests. The Stanford Binet scale is a modified version of the Simon Binet Scale.
Historical Impact The Simon- Binet scale is still used today although slight changes have been made to it. Current uses for the test include clinical and neuropsychological assessment, educational placement, compensation evaluations, career assessment, adult neuropsychological treatment, forensics, and research on aptitude. Various high-IQ societies also accept this test for admission into their ranks. The SBS can be administered to individuals two through eighty-five plus years of age.
