ALGEBRA

WHAT’S ALGEBRA
There once lived a mathematician named AI-
Khwarizmi, whom wrote a book explaining how he
solved equations. He write his book in Arabic and
wrote Al-jabr, which translate to ‘to restore’ or ‘to
put back together’ to describe how terms move to
balance the equation.
The book was later translated from Arabic into Latin,
the word al-jabr became Algebra. Which is the most
important topic in the world of Mathematics.

ALGEBRAIC
EXPRESSION
S
Understanding concepts
in Algebraic expressions
Simplifying Algebraic
Expressions by grouping
One of the topics of algebra is
Algebraic Expressions.
These are mathematical Expressions
consisting of terms made up of
Variables, coefficients, Constants
separated by mathematical
operations (Strana, 2022)

Characteristics
- they represent unknown values
- instead of writing single numbers,
variables allow us to write equations,
formulas and general rules
- in real life they can represent anything.
(Guwahati,2023)
E.g let x = time taken to arrive at point B
from point A
VARIABLES
Definitions:
In Mathematics language a Variables is
:
- Usually letters of the alphabet (x,y,z)

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COEFFICIENTS AND
VARIABLES

In summary,
The relationship between coefficients and variables
The coefficient and the variable are used through
multiplication, a coefficient represents the number of the
unknown value ( variable) you have.
E.g I have 4 Oranges, if I let my Oranges equal to x ( unknown)
therefore it means that I have 4x

IT’S YOUR TURN!!
•Look at the picture below and identify Coefficients and Variables
Figure 4

The combination of these concepts by
mathematical operations gives us
expressions.
Now let’s look at the last expressions
2b(2b +1)
How many thought that the coefficient is
2?

•In such cases you need to know how
to Simplify to be able to identify the
coefficient
•But why do we Simplify?
1.We Simplify to make our expression easy-to-use and easy-to-read.
2.Decreases the number of steps when solving
3.To write in the simplest form ( Chen, n.d.)

HOW TO SIMPLIFY?
•There are many ways to Simplify Algebraic Expressions, one of the ways being by
grouping. (Solving quadratic equations in one variable, n.d.)
•Grouping involves putting terms that have same variables together from a long expression
by adding/subtracting them to find the simplest form of the expression terms with the
same characteristic are called like terms and when they do not have the same
characteristic they are called unlike terms (Strang, 2022)
•E.g if I have 4 Oranges, Ben gives me 3 banana, Fatima 2 Oranges and Tiranda 2 bananas,
which ones would you group together and why?
•4x + 3b + 2x + 2b
•So, do you prefer carrying I prefer carrying 4 bags of these fruits or I can just carry two by
combining Oranges in one bag and bananas in the other bag?
•Have (4x+2x) + (3b+2b) = 6x + 5b)
Figure 5

HERE ARE SOME
GUIDELINES TO SIMPLIFY BY
GROUPING
Example:
4x + 3b +2x +2b
4x +2x + 3b +2b
6x + 5b
Now!! Would you rather work
with 6x + 5b or 4x + 3b + 2x +2b?
1.Identify like terms
2.Group them together and leave unlike
terms as they are.
3.Add terms in each group together
4.And Simplify (Schrimptf, 2013)

IT’S YOUR TURN NOW
SIMPLIFY THE FOLLOWING:
1.2X + 8Y + 8X – 7Y
2.2XY + 2X + 4Y – 3XY +7X – 5Y

LET’S CONCLUDE!!
Important basic Concepts in algebraic expressions
are Variables, Coefficients and variables.
The combination of these are called terms
The Coefficients emphasize the number that the
variables is multiple by
To Simplify Algebraic Expressions:
You need to identify like terms and group them
together. After you add/subtract to get the
simplest form of the expression.
Importance of Simplifying is to make our
expressions easy-to-use when used in an
equation.
