ANGLE OF ELEVATION AND DEPRESSION
OBJECTIVES: illustrate angles of elevation and depression;(M9GEIVd-1) distinguish angle of elevation and depression in a real-life situations identify the line of sight and angles of elevation or depression demonstrate appreciation on illustrating angles of elevation as an important skill needed to understand concepts of trigonometry.
GROUP ACTIVITY: LOOK UP! LOOK DOWN!
Direction: Choose a number.
Task 1 Look for an object inside the classroom that is the same level as your eyes. Draw an image of a person while looking the object. Then draw a horizontal line from the eyes of the observer to the object. List 3 examples of each object.
Task 2 Look for a tall object inside the classroom and draw an image of a person looking up the object. Draw a line from the eyes of the person up to the object and draw also a horizontal line to the eyes of the person. List 3 examples of objects.
Task 3 Look for a small object inside the classroom. Draw an image of a person looking down the small object. Draw a line from the eyes of the person down to the object. Draw also a horizontal line to the eyes of the person. List 3 examples of object.
Questions : 1. Did you learned from the activity? 2. Describe the illustration or picture you have created from the activity. 3. What mathematical concept did you learn from the activity? 4. When you look up to tall objects, are there angles formed? What about when you look down?
LINE OF SIGHT It is an imaginary line that connects the eye of the observer to the object being observe. Object
ANGLE OF ELEVATION It is an angle formed by a horizontal and the line of sight of the observer to the object above. Horizontal line of sight Eye level line of sight
ANGLE OF DEPRESSION It is an angle formed by a horizontal and the line of sight of the observer to the object below. Horizontal line of sight line of sight
Horizontal line of sight Angle of elevation Angle of depression
Elevation is the angle UP from the horizontal. Depression is the angle DOWN from the horizontal. ANTONYMS
In the diagram, 1 is the angle of elevation from the tower T to the plane P . On the other hand, 2 is the angle of depression from the plane to the tower
Since horizontal lines are parallel, 1 2 by the Alternate Interior Angles Theorem. Therefore the angle of elevation from one point is congruent to the angle of depression from the other point.
1. You’re looking to the flying kite. ANGLE OF ELEVATION
2. You’re sweeping the floor. ANGLE OF DEPRESSION
3. In baking(TLE), when you are kneading a bread. ANGLE OF DEPRESSION
4. In PE, when you’re playing a basketball and you’re shooting the ball in a ring. ANGLE OF ELEVATION
5. In Science, when you are observing an experiment. ANGLE OF DEPRESSION
EXPERIMENT : a scientific test in which you perform a series of actions and carefully observe their effects in order to learn about something.
Try This! Identify the segment that represents the line of sight, and identify the angles (if any) that represent the angle of elevation or angle of depression.
Line of sight = AT C A T CAT or TAC
Line of sight = PR SPR or RPS Angle of depression
Angle of elevation J O Y Line of sight = OJ JOY or YOJ
Line of sight = KS SKY or YKS S K Y Angle of elevation
What have you learn today? What is an angle of elevation? How about angle of depression?
Identify the segment that represents the line of sight, and identify the angles (if any) that represent the angle of elevation or angle of depression. A B C M E N ELEVATION/DEPRESSION NAME OF THE ANGLE LINE OF SIGHT ELEVATION ELEVATION DEPRESSION X Y Z <ABC/ <CBA <MEN/ <NEM <YZX/<XZY ZX EM BA
Assignment: Illustrate and draw the following problems. 1.If an airplane that is cruising at an altitude of 10km wants to land at NAIA, it must begin its descent so that the angle of depression to the airport is 9 degrees. 2.A bird sits on top of a 3-meter lamp post. The angle of depression from the bird to the feet of an observer standing away from the lamp post is 45 degrees.
