Science 6 Week 4

Day 1

Animals: Characteristics of Vertebrates

Body Hunt Directions : Complete the table below by identifying if the animals have the following body parts. Answer it by putting a check (/) and X in the table below.

Ask the pupils to pick one toy animal inside a big box. After all have picked, let the pupils who got the animal that belongs to family of birds stand. Next in line, amphibians, mammals, fish, and reptile family.

Let us learn how to classify vertebrates animals and their characteristics.

Animals can be found anywhere in our environment; in the sea, grassland, forests, ponds, sanctuary, and even in our homes. These animals in different ecosystem and habitat are classified as vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates are animals with backbones and have varying body parts used in walking, swimming, flying, climbing, and hopping. They eat grass, meat, insects, and seeds as their food.

Vertebrates are animals with backbone while invertebrates are animals with no backbone. They can be oviparous and viviparous or they are born alive with their parents such as dogs, carabao, and cats, while oviparous animals are those that are hatched from egg such as chicken, duck, and snake.

Discuss concept of the lesson. GIVE MORE EXAMPLES of Vertebrates.

Direction: Fill in the table with the distinguishing characteristics of the following group of vertebrates by completing the chart.

What are vertebrates?

Direction: Match the column A with B. Write the letter of the correct answer on your Science journal.

Identify the classification of animals by writing mammals, amphibians, fish, birds or reptiles on the blanks provided.

Day 2

Animals: Characteristics of Vertebrates

What are vertebrates?

G uessing Game: 1. What animls live in water with gills, fins and scales? F _ _ _ h 2. What animals with backbones called? _ e r _ _ b _ _ t _ s 3. What animals with wings, feathers that love to fly? B _ _ _s 4. What group of vertebrates is a dog? M _ _ _ a _ s 5. What group of vertebrates is a frog? A _ _ _ i b _ _ n s 6. What group of vertebrates is snake? R _ _ t i _ _ s

Animals found in the locality are classified into vertebrates and invertebrates.

Choose one animal that belongs to vertebrates. Write down its characteristics.

Direction: Answer the following questions below. Write your answers on your Science journal. 1.What characteristics are similar to all vertebrates? 2. In what way is a mammal different from reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish? 4. How do reptiles and amphibians differ?

Give examples of vertebrates animals?

Direction: Answer the questions using your Science journal. 1. Frogs are useful animals that eat insects that are harmful to human and other animals. People living in a rural area exploit it by consuming them as food. Since frog population is already diminishing in number, in what way you can be of help to remind the people the importance of frogs? 2. Mammals such as dogs and cats were cared as pet. They were furry animals that usually have ticks and fleas in their bodies that were parasitic. These parasites harmed their host and often cause health problems to animals. How will you get rid of these pests that threatened your pet?

What are the classifications of vertebrates?

Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer using your Science journal. 1. Which of the following animals can be found in the locality?

2. Animals are classified as vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates are those animals with backbones while invertebrates are animals without backbones.

Direction: Identify animals as vertebrates and invertebrates by writing your answers on your journal. A. butterfly - ___________________ B. carabao - ____________________ C. chicken - ____________________ D. snail - _____________________ E. praying mantis - _____________ 3. To what group of animals does the illustration belongs? A. vertebrates C. invertebrates B. arthropods D. insects 4. Which is the distinguishing characteristic of invertebrates? A. They have backbones . B. They have spinal cord. C. They have no backbones. D. They have brain.

Day 4

Animals: Characteristics of Vertebrates

Give examples of vertebrates animals.

Study the pictures below and identify the animal based on the statement of their characteristics. Write your answers on the space provided before each number.

____________1. It has long legs used for running fast ____________2. It has webbed wings for flying and only active at night ____________3. It has fins and gills for swimming at breathing in water ____________4. Its body is covered with scales and has fangs with venom ____________5. It has wings covered with feathers for flying ____________6. It can live both land and water and has strong hind legs used for jumping ____________7. It is a land animal covered with fur and gives birth to a live offspring

Vertebrates are animals with backbone and is classified into five (5) groups namely: amphibian, bird, fish, mammal, and reptile.

Fishes, amphibians and reptiles are cold-blooded or ectotherms. Their body temperature depends on the temperature of the surroundings. Birds and mammals are warmblooded or endotherms. Their bodies can produce heat and regulate body temperature if the temperature of the surrounding changes. Fishes are cold-blooded vertebrates with great variety of appearance, adaptation and habits. They have gills and fins that enables them to breath and swim in the water. They live in rivers, oceans, lakes and some other bodies of water. They are divided into three (3) groups called jawless fish, bony fish and cartilaginous fish.

Amphibians are cold-blooded vertebrates that can live both land and water. They have gills while they are young and develop lungs later in their lives. Amphibians can adapt well in land however they depend more on water where they lay eggs without shells. Some examples of amphibians are salamanders , frogs and newts .

Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates with waterproof bodies covered with scales. They produce eggs with tough leathery shells and they have three-chambered hearts like amphibians. Some examples of reptiles are crocodiles , turtles , lizards and snakes .

What are the characteristics of vertebrates animals?

Classify the following vertebrates in its proper column. Put it on your Science journal.

Directions: Read the question carefully and encircle the letter of the correct answer. 1. What best describes a reptile? a. It has gills and fins b. It has wings and feathers c. It has dry skin and covered with scales d. It can live both land and water 2. In what habitat does the fish use its fins and gills? a. Land b. Air c. Water d. both land and water

3. Which animal can likely survive in land and water? a. Frog b. Salamander c. Duck d. Both a & b 4. What protects the birds from the weather? a. Its beak b. Its wings c. Its feathers d. Its legs 5. Which animal is marsupial or has pouch in the body? a. Deer b. Kangaroo c. Rat d. Lizard

Day 5

Animals: Characteristics of Vertebrates

Name animals that belong to each group of vertebrates and tell its characteristics.

Do you know this animal?

Birds are warm-blooded vertebrates with wings that enables them to fly. They have beaks instead of teeth. Their body is also structured suited for flying. Most birds can fly but there are also flightless birds or birds that cannot fly like ostrich and penguin . Mammals are warm-blooded animals like birds but more complex than any other vertebrates. They have four-chambered hearts and the very distinctive mammary glands that produce milk for their offspring. Mammals are also grouped into three (3) namely; Monotremes or the egg-laying mammals like the platypus Marsupials or the pouched-mammals like kangaroos and Placental Mammals like humans and dogs

Vertebrate animals are really amazing. Let us know more about these amazing creatures by doing this activity below and familiarize more of their characteristics.

Name the five classification of vertebrates animals.

Directions: Complete the table by writing the distinctive characteristics of the following groups of vertebrates found on the box below. No duplication of answers.

Directions: Identify the class of vertebrates being referred to by the statements below. Select your answers from the box and write your answer on the space provided before each number ________1. Bodies covered with feathers and have wings ________2. Possess dry skin covered with scales ________3. Feed their young with milk from their mammary glands ________4. Have gills for breathing and fins for swimming ________5. Breathe through their gills while young; develop lungs later in their lives
