Who? Yellow Pond

ANOVA ANOVA stands for Analysis of Variance. Developed by Ronald Fisher Yellow Pond

What? Yellow Pond

ANOVA ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) is a statistical test used to analyze the difference between the means of more than two groups. Yellow Pond

ANOVA In the case of comparing three or more groups, ANOVA is preferred. There are two elements of ANOVA: Variation within each group Variation between groups Yellow Pond

Types of ANOVA Yellow Pond

Yellow Pond

One Way ANOVA One-Way Analysis of Variance tells us if there are any statistical differences between the means of three or more independent groups. Yellow Pond

Two way ANOVA A two-way ANOVA test is a statistical test used to determine the effect of two nominal predictor variables on a continuous outcome variable. A two-way ANOVA is used to estimate how the mean of a quantitative variable changes according to the levels of two categorical variables. Yellow Pond

Interpretation The larger the F ratio, the more likely that the groups have different means. Higher F ratio values indicate the variation between groups is larger than the individual variation of groups. In such cases, it is more likely that the mean of the groups are different. By contrast, in case of lower F ratio values, the individual variation of groups are larger than the variations between groups. Thus, we can conclude that the elements in a group are highly different rather than the entire groups. Yellow Pond

Important Terms Yellow Pond

Important Terms Related to ANOVA Means (Grand and Sample) F-Statistics Sum of Squares Mean Squared Error (MSE) Hypothesis Group Variability Yellow Pond

Means (Grand and Sample) A sample mean is the average value for a group, whereas the grand mean is the average of sample means from various groups or the mean of all observations combined. Yellow Pond

F-Statistics F-statistic or F-ratio is a statistical measure that tells us about the extent of difference between the means of different samples. Lower the F-ratio, closer are the sample means. Yellow Pond

Sum of Squares The sum of squares is a technique used in regression analysis to determine the dispersion of data points. It is used in the ANOVA test to compute the value of F. Yellow Pond

Mean Squared Error (MSE) The Mean Squared Error gives us the average error in the data set. Yellow Pond

Hypothesis In ANOVA, we have Null Hypothesis and an Alternative Hypothesis. The Null hypothesis is valid when all the sample means are equal, or they don’t have any major difference. The Alternate Hypothesis is valid when at least one of the sample means is different from the other. Yellow Pond

Group Variability In ANOVA, a group is a set of samples within the independent variable. Between-group variability occurs when there is a significant variation in the sample distributions of individual groups. Within-group variability occurs when there are variations in the sample distribution within a single group. Yellow Pond
