for the commercial production of honey and bees

Importance of bee keeping
♦It provides honey-a valuable nutritional food, additives in many food,
bakery products and beverages. It also used in cosmetic, pharmaceutical and
medical field.
♦It provides bees wax-which has many uses as preparation of candles,
polishing materials, cosmetics, crayons, modeling materials and many
pharmaceutical products.
♦It provides other products as pollenand royal jellyare good energizer and
stimulant while propolisand bee venomare important in medical field.
♦It increases agriculture crop production.More than 40% of crop production
is depends on honeybee pollination.

Buddhistscriptures,popularepicsastheRamayana,the
MahabharataandtheQuran.
Useofhoneyasfood,medicineandindifferentformsisa
traditionalpracticeinIndia.
RockpaintingsfoundincentralIndia(MadhyaPradesh)have
describedhoneyhuntingdatingtoMesolithicperiod15,000to
11,000BC.

In1851,L.L.LangstrothinUSAdesignedfirsttrulymovable
framehiveforApismellifera.Thishiveispopularoverallthe
worldas‘LangstrothWoodenhive’.
In1910,Rev.FatherNewtondesignedasmallhivesuitablefor
Indianhoneybee,Apisceranaindica.Thishivewhichwasnamed
afterhimas“NewtonHive”.
TheEuropeanbee,A.melliferawassuccessfullyintroducedand
establishedinourcountrysince1960.
Atpresentboththehivebeespeciesarebeingusedinmodern
beekeeping.
History:
Modern beekeeping

Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) in 1956.
Central Bee Research and Training Institute (CBRTI) at Pune in
1962.
Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), Pusa, New
Delhi under KVIC started funding the beekeeping projects to
raise the industrial status of apiculture in India.
National Bee Board (NBB) on 19
th
July, 2000.
National Bee Board (NBB) was reconstituted in 13
th
June 2006.
The main objective of the board is to improve crop productivity and
honey production through scientific beekeeping for increasing the
income of the beekeepers and farmers.

worth of Rs. 732.16 Crore (2018-19).

30lakhbeecolonies.
Presently,200millionBeecoloniesarerequiredforenhancingtheir
yieldwhichwillprovideemploymentto215lakhpersonsand
produce10milliontonsofhoneyandincreaseincropproduction.
