‘Applied Linguistics means many things to many people’ (Cook 2006) . A mediation between theory and practice (Kaplan and Widdowson 1992: 76) ; a synthesis of research from a variety of disciplines, including linguistics (Hudson 1999) ; ‘it presupposes linguistics … one cannot apply what one does not know’ ( Corder 1973: 7);
Yet another definition of applied linguistics ‘critical applied linguistics … questions and concerns, issues such as identity, sexuality, access, ethics, disparity, difference, desire, or the reproduction of Otherness that have not been considered as concerns related to applied linguistics’ (Pennycook 2004: 803–4) .
What is Applied Linguistics? The British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL) aims: “ the advancement of education by fostering and promoting , by any lawful charitable means, the study of language use , language acquisition and language teaching and the fostering of inter-disciplinary collaboration in this study” (BAAL, 1994) .

What’s the relationship between applied linguistics & linguistics?
LINGUISTICS vs APPLIED LINGUISTICS: a difficult relationship Linguistics looks for generalities underpinning actual appearances. So, it represents an abstract idealization of language rather than the way it is experienced in the real world. Is there any way we can scientifically look into the interplay/intersection between ‘abstraction’ and ‘experience’?
LINGUISTICS vs APPLIED LINGUISTICS: a difficult relationship Sociolinguistics endeavors to find systematic relationships between social groupings and contexts in which language is used. Functional linguistics views language as a means of communication, the purpose it fills and how people actually use it. Corpus linguistics concerns vast amount of actual language database that is searchable to yield extensive information about word frequencies, collocations and combinations which is not revealed by intuition.
LINGUISTICS vs APPLIED LINGUISTICS: a difficult relationship So, SOCIOLINGUISTICS, FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS & CORPUS LINGUISTICS = applied linguistics? Maybe NOT so, because: they are abstract ; they idealize and detach language from the experience of its use . their purpose is to describe and explain , not to engage with decision making (Cook 2003).
LINGUISTICS vs APPLIED LINGUISTICS: a difficult relationship There is a glaring gap between abstract representation of language (in its varying forms) and everyday use of language Linguistic theory and description cannot be deployed directly to solve real problems and it is not the task of applied linguistics to match up linguistic findings with real-life problems. The attempt to reconcile the gap is the major challenge for applied linguistics. Applied linguistics makes use of linguistic findings to explore how the perception of problems may be changed or reformulated to make them more amenable to solutions.
LINGUISTICS vs APPLIED LINGUISTICS: a difficult relationship The relationship between linguistics and applied linguistics is bidirectional. Applied linguists must come to grips with linguistic theories as a coherent understanding of them is important for applied linguistics research and practice. The insights applied linguists gain from confronting real-world language-related problems may inform the development or refinement of linguistic theories.
