AQUATIC MACROPHYTES Ena Kandel L5 Environmental Science
WHAT is AQUATIC MACROPHYTES? Aquatic macrophytes are aquatic photosynthetic organisms, large enough to see with the naked eye. They actively grow permanently or periodically submerged below, floating on, or growing up through the water surface. Some examples are: Water Lilly, duckweed, lotus, common reed etc.
Free Floating The water plant that floats on the surface of a pond with its roots hanging in the water. Its example are:
DUCK WEED Common Name – Lesser Duckweed Scientific Name – Lemnoideae
Water chesnut Common Name: Water chesnut Scientific Name : Eleocharis dulcis
Floating Leaves The water plant whose roots are attached to the ground and leaves float in the water is called floating leaves It’s example are:
Water cabbage Common name: Water lettuce, nile cabbage or shelflower Scientific name : Pistia stratiotes
Lotus Common Name: Lotus Scientific Name : Nelumbo nucifera
Emergent Emergent plants are the plants which are rooted in the lake bottom, but their leaves and stems extend out of the water. It’s example are:
Common Reed Common Name: Common Reed Scientific Name: Phragmites
Cattail Common Name: Bulrush, Cattail Scientific Name : Typha
Submerged Submerged plants are rooted plants are the plants with most of their vegetative mass below the water surface, although small portions may stick above the water . Its example are:
Eel Grass Common Name: Eel grass or Tape grass or Vallis Scientific Name: Vallisneria
Pondweed Common Name: Curly Leaf Scientific Name: Potamogeton crispus
Marginal The plants which grow around the margins where the water is shallow. It’s example are:
Mangrove Common Name: Mangrove Scientific Name: Rhizophora mangle
Umbrella Palm Common Name: Umbrella sedge or umbrella palm Scientific Name : Cyperus alternifolius
