Why Study Literature? • Literature helps us feel, understand, and connect with others. • It reflects human experiences across time and cultures. Discussion Questions: • How can reading literature help us understand life better? • Can literature change people’s beliefs or feelings?

What is Literature? Literature is the art of using words to express ideas, emotions, and stories that reflect human experiences. Discussion Questions: • What comes to your mind when you hear the word literature? • Is literature only about books? Can movies or songs be considered literature?

Major Forms of Literature • Prose – Written in ordinary language (novels, short stories, essays) • Poetry – Uses rhythm, rhyme, and expressive language (sonnets, haiku) • Drama – Written to be performed (plays, scripts)

Genres of Literature • Fiction (romance, mystery, science fiction) • Non-fiction (biography, memoir, essays) • Mythology & Folklore • Fantasy and Epic tales Discussion Prompt: Why do people enjoy fictional stories even if they aren’t real?

Elements of Literature • Theme – Central message or idea • Plot – Sequence of events • Character – People or beings in the story • Setting – Where/when the story happens • Point of View – Who tells the story • Style – Author’s way of writing

Closing Activity: Mini Literary Circle 1. Pick a short story or poem. 2. Read it individually or in groups. 3. Discuss: – What is the story about? – What did you feel? – What is the author trying to say?
