STUDENT’S PORTFOLIO

Adv. Reading- Writing

WHAT IS IT? It is a collection of student writing that’s intended to demonstrate how the student has developed as a writer during the course. Purposes Assess their own work and their progress as writers. Demonstrate a writer's improvement and achievements. It allows writers to collect a body of writing in one place and to organize and present it in an effective, attractive format. It helps instructor to focus more on the complete body of work than on individual assignments. Students reflect on their work and measure their progress; as they do so, they may improve their ability to evaluate their own work.

Steps on the writing process 4 DRAFTING The student creates a rough draft that will later be improved on after receiving feedback. PREWRITING The student chooses the topic, vocabulary and start organizing the ideas REVISING The student reviews and improves the draft EDITING T h e student makes any correction needed in spelling and grammar, and also checks if the sentences make sense. Prepare to write Write Edit: writing the final draft 1 page 1- 2 pages 1-2 pages These are the pages you must include for each writing process in class ( we have 3 writing tasks  in ARW1)

In the ARW 1-2 course, there are 3 writings. It means that the student must include the papers with the evidence of the process in each one. The steps have the following names on the book: 1.Prepare to write 2.Writing the draft 3.Writing the final draft (corrected) 5

The purpose of the graphic organizer is to brainstorm and generate ideas regarding to a topic and get them organized. A mind map or idea web, is a great place to start. This usually consists of a circle in the center with the main idea or topic, which branches out to other circles, which contain the main points or details. Graphic organizer

After the graphic organizer, students are going to explain and support their ideas depicted in their graphic organizer but in an essay format. They are going to focus on the organization of their essay and highlighting how their main idea is presented in the THESIS STATEMENT and how it is supported in subsequent paragraphs. FIRST DRAFT

FINAL DRAFT Following the cover letter, the portfolio should contain the finished drafts of the works done throughout the course. These will be reviewed by the teacher and should represent students’ best work.

OUTCOMES REFLECTION Begin the cover letter by explaining what the portfolio is. Introduce each work and share its purpose. Students will share with their teacher how the essay was developed, what process was used, and what the goal for each essay was. After reflection of each essay is offered, they should then reflect on their strengths and weaknesses as writers. They should discuss how their writing has changed, what new techniques have been developed, what problems were encountered, and how the problems were solved, and the overall skills they have as writers.

Vocabulary log Finally, include a vocabulary log and evidence of research on selected topics.

Outcomes reflection Looking back on this class, I have realized just how much my writing has improved since the beginning of the cycle and the first assignment. I went from being a writer that was not confident in his work and over-thought everything into someone who found his own writing style and can quickly and effectively write an essay (of course revising it as well). This portfolio was made so that I can show off what I have learned from this class and show off just how much I have improved as a writer. In the beginning of the cycle there were many things that I had to revise in my essays, and they took me twice as long to write as well. However, by the end of the cycle writing, although not quite second nature to me, has become much simpler and my writing in general has become much stronger as well. There are many things that I have learned about myself this cycle. I have learned that if I do not over-think my papers while I am writing them and stop trying to make them perfect (until the end), writing becomes much easier for me. This portfolio not only shows everyone how I have progressed as a writer, but it also shows what I have learned about myself as a writer. It contains not only my good works, but also my mistakes, and through the work in here I am able to see the mistakes that I commonly make while writing such as over-generalizing things and writing about something before I completely understand it myself. However, there are also things that I realized works well for me in my writing. Unlike what I thought in the beginning of the cycle, I write much better when I make a general outline and write out the paper without correcting myself as I go. In this ARW1 course I have learned many things about myself as a writer and have finally found a way of writing that works best for me. SAMPLE
