Opinion vs Assertion Opinion -OPINION IS A THOUGHT, BELIEF OR JUDGMENT
THAT A PERSON OR A GROUP OF PEOPLE HAVE
ABOUT SOMETHING OR SOMEONE WHICH ARE
BASED MAINLY ON THEIR BELIEFS. IT MAY ALSO
BE A JUDGMENT MADE BY AN EXPERT.
Opinion vs Assertion Assertion -
A STRONG STATEMENT PRESENTED AS
IF IT WERE FACT. IT IS DEFINITE,
CONFIDENT, AND CAN OFTEN BE
SUPPORTED WITH EVIDENCE.
Examples: Opinion “I THINK CHOCOLATE
ICE CREAM TASTES
BETTER THAN
VANILLA.” Assertion “EDUCATION IS
THE KEY TO
SUCCESS.”
In your view, what makes
opinions and assertions
important in communication?
ASSERTIONS AND OPINIONS MATTER
BECAUSE THEY HELP US EXPRESS OUR
THOUGHTS CLEARLY, SHARE OUR
PERSPECTIVES, AND SPARK MEANINGFUL
CONVERSATIONS THAT LEAD TO DEEPER
UNDERSTANDING.
7 types of opinion
1. PERSONAL OPINION – BASED ON
INDIVIDUAL FEELINGS, PREFERENCES, OR
EXPERIENCES.
2. PUBLIC OPINION – THE COLLECTIVE
VIEWPOINT OF A GROUP, COMMUNITY, OR
SOCIETY.
3. EXPERT OPINION – IDEAS OR ADVICE FROM
PEOPLE WHO REALLY KNOW THE SUBJECT
WELL.
4. LAY OPINION – THE EVERYDAY THOUGHTS
OF REGULAR PEOPLE, EVEN IF THEY’RE NOT
EXPERTS.
5. VALUE-BASED OPINION – OPINIONS BASED
ON MORALS, BELIEFS, OR WHAT SOMEONE
THINKS IS RIGHT OR WRONG.
6. PREDICTIVE OPINION – WHEN SOMEONE
SHARES WHAT THEY BELIEVE WILL HAPPEN IN
THE FUTURE.
7. COMPARATIVE OPINION
– WHEN YOU WEIGH TWO OR MORE
THINGS AND SAY WHICH ONE IS
BETTER OR MORE SUITABLE.
4 types of assertion
1. BASIC ASSERTION – SIMPLY
SAYING WHAT YOU THINK OR
FEEL IN A CLEAR WAY. EXAMPLE:
“I DON’T AGREE WITH THAT
CHOICE.”
2. EMPATHIC ASSERTION – SHOWING
YOU UNDERSTAND THE OTHER
PERSON’S FEELINGS, BUT STILL SHARING
YOUR OWN.EXAMPLE:
“I GET THAT YOU’RE UPSET, BUT I
ALSO NEED MORE TIME TO FINISH
THIS.”
3. ESCALATING ASSERTION – STANDING
YOUR GROUND MORE FIRMLY IF SOMEONE
IGNORES YOUR FIRST STATEMENT. EXAMPLE:
“I ALREADY ASKED YOU NOT TO INTERRUPT
ME. IF IT KEEPS HAPPENING, I’LL HAVE TO
STOP THIS CONVERSATION.”
4. LANGUAGE ASSERTION – USING “I”
STATEMENTS TO EXPLAIN HOW SOMETHING
AFFECTS YOU WITHOUT BLAMING. EXAMPLE:
“I FEEL FRUSTRATED WHEN MEETINGS START
LATE BECAUSE IT CUTS INTO OUR WORKING
TIME.”
how to formulate
an opinion
opinion Formula: Statement + Reason (+ Example)
EXAMPLE:
“IN MY OPINION, ONLINE LEARNING IS
BETTER BECAUSE IT SAVES TIME.”
how to formulate
an assertion
assertion Formula: Clear, firm statement (+ Fact/Proof)
EXAMPLE:
“EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS.”
Always remember! Opinion = what you think.
Assertion = what you declare
as true.
