Media and Internet: Accurate vs Inaccurate Greetings, and welcome to this presentation. This presentation is an educative session to demonstrate the harmful effect of inappropriate information from media sources negatively influencing individuals. I will share a personal story of how, during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was negatively influenced by false information I obtained from social media platforms, but how I overcame that state by engaging in appropriate research. As healthcare professionals, it is essential for you to actively seek out appropriate sources of information and pass on that information to your patients to curb the spread of misinformation .

Identifying the Influence At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was limited information regarding the illness's pathophysiology, treatment, and prevention. As such, I often looked to social media to learn about COVID-19 symptoms and prevention methods. Unfortunately, some sources had misleading information regarding the spread and prevention of the illness, claiming that masking protocols were ineffective in preventing the spread. Unfortunately, I trusted these sources without fact-checking them and engaged in behavior that endangered myself and others .

Learning About COVID-19 Luckily, after some time, I researched and uncovered articles that helped me better understand the pathophysiology of the disease and how best to prevent and manage it. I chose this route because evidence suggests that engaging with these research materials is one of the most appropriate and effective means of counteracting inaccurate health information ( Gradoń et al., 2021). One of the sources I found was the ScienceDirect journal, which had freely available articles on the subject matter. An example of such an article was a paper by (Pradhan et al., 2020) titled “A Review of Current Interventions for COVID-19 Prevention," which explained the appropriate COVID-19 prevention measures.

Symptoms and Prevention Methods Some of the prevention methods I learned from this article were: Hand hygiene Mask-wearing Social distancing The article concluded that concurrent use of these strategies significantly reduced the spread of the virus and encouraged the continual use of preventive measures .

Determining Accuracy, Credibility, and Reliability To determine the accuracy of my source : I cross-referenced the information I found from multiple sources to see whether there was academic consensus. I Evaluated the credibility of the authors based on authority and expertise. I Identified consistency among reliable sources. Lastly, the article was highly relevant since its findings applied to various healthcare environments .

Conclusion To summarize, my personal experience with the media's impact during the COVID-19 epidemic emphasizes the essential need to identify reliable information in the avalanche of available content. This event has taught me the importance of confirming information from credible sources, especially during periods of uncertainty. We may better traverse the immense sea of information by cross-referencing it, evaluating reliability, and prioritizing credible sources. Moving ahead, let us embrace analytical thinking and media literacy to help us make more educated choices while adding to the development of a more informed society. Thank you for accompanying me on this path of introspection and learning .
