ASSIGNING GRADES

Grading is used to evaluate and provide feedback on student work. In this way, instructors communicate to students how they are performing in the course and where they need more help to achieve the course’s goals.

NATURE FOR ASSIGNING GRADES Grades are the teacher’s judgement on the performance of students based on a certain criteria. Aside from grading the students’ performance, teachers have to inform the students and parents about the academic progress in various learning areas in the curriculum.

PURPOSE FOR ASSIGNING GRADES As an evaluation of student work, effort, understanding of course content, skill development, and progress; As a source of self-motivation to students for continued learning and improvement; As a means of organizing a lesson, a unit, or a semester/ framing learning objectives As a means of communicating the students, parents, graduate schools, and future employers about a student’s potential in college or predictor for further success.

While these purposes of grading are very current examples of practices that are observed in the classroom today, it may not be the best way to represent data accurately. One must determine the purpose of grading before giving students grades. Teachers must examine if grades are the best method to use to convey this data, and if their purpose aligns with the grading practices being used. It would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to label one grade as serving all of the above purposes.

As feedback, grades can also inform: Students as to their own learning, clarifying for them what they understand, what they don’t understand, and where they can improve. Instructors on their students’ learning to help inform future teaching decisions.
