Average – An Easy Way to Understand Mathematics Presentation
What is Average? Average is the central value of a group of numbers. Formula: Average = Sum of observations ÷ Number of observations Example: (10 + 20 + 30) ÷ 3 = 60 ÷ 3 = 20
Why Do We Use Average? To find a central or common value. For easy comparison between sets of data. Real-life uses: cricket batting average, temperature, exam marks.
Formula of Average Average = (Sum of Observations) ÷ (Total Number of Observations)
Example 1 Numbers: 10, 20, 30, 40 Step 1: Add all numbers = 100 Step 2: Divide by total count = 100 ÷ 4 = 25 So, Average = 25
Example 2 (Real Life) Marks in 5 subjects: 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 Total = 350, Count = 5 Average = 350 ÷ 5 = 70 So, the average marks = 70
Word Problems 1) The average age of 4 friends is 12 years. What is their total age? → Total = Average × Number = 12 × 4 = 48 years 2) The average of 5 numbers is 20. Find the 5th number if sum of first 4 is 70. → Total = 20 × 5 = 100, so 5th number = 100 - 70 = 30
Tricks for Average If average and number are given, you can quickly find the total. Example: Average = 25, Numbers = 4 → Total = 25 × 4 = 100 Useful for solving word problems faster.
Summary Average = Sum ÷ Count Used in real life and exams Helps to compare and analyze data easily
