BAG: Tool which the nurse uses during his/her home visit to perform nursing procedures with ease and deftness, saving time and effort with the end in view of rendering effective nursing care. It is a vehicle for carrying the tools needed during a home visit to the antenatal, postnatal, infant, preschool and school child, as well as to the person suffering from diseases. Bag is designed to carry equipment and material needed during a home visit, school or factory.

Principles Three Main principles as per TNAI are; Cleanliness: the bag and its contents are all designed for efficiency and cleanliness (keeping bag and its contents clean, hand washing each time) Boil contaminated instruments and equipment before returning them to the bag. Articles contaminated by soil must be autoclaved to be safe from spores. 2. Protect and take care of bag- a well made bag that has been properly cared for should last for 8-10 years.
Other principles; Equip the bag economically Keep sterile equipments in separate compartment Teach and demonstrate the responsible person of the family regarding home nursing care with the help of their materials and equipments . Discard the contaminated wastes and products properly

Special Considerations in the Use of the Bag 1. The bag should contain all necessary articles, supplies and equipment which may be used to answer emergency needs. 2. The bag and it’s contents should be cleaned as often as possible, supplies replaced and ready for use at any time. 3. The bag and it’s contents should be well protected from contact with any article in the home of the patients, from animal touch, and from children. 4. The arrangement of the contents of the bag should be the one most convenient to the user to facilitate the efficiency and avoid confusion. 5. Hand washing is done as frequently as the situation calls for, helps in minimizing or avoiding contamination of the bag and its contents. 6. The bag when used for a communicable case should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before keeping and re-using.
When and where the bag is used 1. Home, school and industrial visit 2. When there is ill person- to demonstrate nursing care 3. While doing health Inspection of the person in the community, while conducting health screenings.
Design of the bag Made by thick cotton cloth material/ plastic which is internally supported by wooden, plastic or metal frames/slabs. It has 3 outer pockets and two inner chambers. Upper inner chamber is again divided into many sub chambers to keep the articles in proper manner. Inner upper chamber is known as sterile compartment and inner lower compartment is known as clean compartment.
