students “show what they know” and applying the concepts
they've learned to evaluations that show they've truly grasped
the subject.

Student-centered learning, also known as learner-
centered education, broadly encompasses methods
of teaching that shift the focus of instruction from
the teacher to the student

Problem based or oriented learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered
approach in which students learn about a subject by
working in groups to solve an open-ended problem.
This problem is what drives the motivation and the
learning.

Task based learning
Task-based learning (TskBL) is a simulated learning
approach in which the focus for students is a real task
done by a nursing professional. TskBL includes
standardized patient encounters and is helpful to provide
early clinical exposure.

Community-based learning is a teaching and learning
strategy that integrates meaningful community
engagement with instruction and reflection to enrich the
learning experience with a greater emphasis on reciprocal
learning and reflection.

Small group teaching

Small group teaching is a student-centered approach where all
students join together in a free discussion on a particular topic
and engage in active learning. Properly designed small group
learning activities create an active and safe learning environment
with beneficial opportunities for peer- peer interactions. It allows
students — typically in groups of eight to12 to practice, make
mistakes and work out how to think about what they're learning,
on their own terms.

Practice or Hospital based learning

Practice based learning takes place during clinical placements
which involve a range of learning opportunities for student
development. Students apply and consolidate their learning,
bringing together academic theory, workplace practice to develop
skills and competences needed to register.

Self-directed learning

Self-directed learning describes a process in which individuals
take the initiative, with or without the help of others, in diagnosing
their learning needs, formulating learning goals, identifying human
and material resources for learning, choosing and implementing
appropriate learning strategies, and evaluating learning
outcomes.

Game-based learning

is the integration of game elements into “conventional” learning
activities in order to increase engagement and motivation. It
involves designing learning activities so that game characteristics
and game principles inhere within the learning activities
themselves.

Inquiry-based learning

Inquiry-based learning is a student-centered teaching method
that encourages students to ask questions and investigate real-
world problems. In this type of learning environment, students are
actively engaged in the learning process and are given the
opportunity to explore their natural curiosities.

Kinesthetic learning

kinesthetic learning links the process of learning to physical

activity. It is a learning style during which the learner has to feel or

move in order to learn more effectively. Examples:

the information.

Personalized Learning

Personalized learning is a teaching model based on students
learn in different ways and at different paces. Each student gets a
“learning plan” based on how they learn, what they know, and
what their skills and interests are. It’s the opposite of the “one size
fits all” approach used in most schools.

Collaborative Learning

A collaborative (or cooperative) learning approach involves students
working together on activities or learning tasks in a group small enough to
ensure that everyone participates. Students in the group may work on
separate tasks contributing to a common overall outcome or work together
on a shared task. For example: Pair or group discussions, Completing
shared tasks in a pair or group, e.g. matching, sorting, ranking.

Thinking-based Learning

The thinking-based learning is an educational model whose aim is to teach
the developing of skills such as reasoning or critical thinking. Thinking-
based learning (TBL) is a method of teaching and learning where the
teaching of a specific thinking skill is infused into the teaching of content or
subject matter.

Discussion-based Learning

Discussion-Based Learning (also called the “Harkness Method") is a
learning style that challenges students to be responsible for their own
education. Students are required to sit around an oval-discussion table and
are tasked to find new information together, talk, wait for answers, and
ultimately think for themselves.

Self-Awareness

Understanding your emotions and thoughts and how they
influence your behavior. Skills include identifying emotions,
self-perception, recognizing strengths, self-confidence, and
self-efficacy.

Self-efficacy is the belief in your ability to succeed in specific
situations or accomplishment of a task.

Self-Management

The ability to regulate your emotions and behaviors in different
situations and to set and work toward goals. Skills include executive
function and self-regulation, stress-management, and self-discipline.
Executive function and self-regulation are the mental processes that
enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle
multiple tasks successfully. Our brains need this skill set to filter
distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and control
impulses.

Responsible Decision-Making

The ability to make positive choices and take responsibility
for positive and negative outcomes. Skills include identifying
problems, analyzing situations, solving problems, and
reflection.

Social Awareness

The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with
others. Skills include empathy, appreciating differences, and
respect.

Relationship Skills

The ability to establish and maintain healthy and meaningful
relationships with others. Skills include communicating
clearly, listening, cooperation, resisting negative pressure,

Flipped class

Flipped learning is a methodology that helps teachers to prioritize active
learning during class time by assigning students lecture materials and
presentations to be viewed at home or outside of class. A flipped
classroom is structured around the idea that lecture or direct instruction
is not the best use of class time. Instead students encounter information
before class, freeing class time for activities that involve higher order
thinking.

Integrated seminar courses are one-semester courses for first-
year students focused on the central role of the humanities,

Think-pair-share (TPS) is a collaborative learning strategy where
students work together to solve a problem or answer a question about
an assigned reading. This strategy requires students to (1) think
individually about a topic or answer to a question; and (2) share ideas

focuses attention and engages students in comprehending the reading
material.

3-2-1 Count Down

A 3-2-1 prompt helps students structure their responses to a text, film, or
lesson by asking them to describe three takeaways, two questions, and
one thing they enjoyed.

It provides an easy way for teachers to check for understanding and to
gauge students’ interest in a topic. Sharing 3-2-1 responses is also an
effective way to prompt a class discussion or to review material from the
previous lesson.

Strategic questioning is the skill of asking the questions that will make a
difference. It is a powerful tool for personal and social change. It is a tool

for giving service to any issue, as it helps people discover their own
strategies and ideas for change.

The Interactive demonstration (ID) is a training technique in which

number of steps are used to promote the learning of a new skill or
practice with active participation of the trainees.

Entry/Exit tickets

Entry/exit tickets refer to a method of classroom instruction where instructors
distribute an index card with a discussion question on it for students to answer or
reflect upon within a given time frame.

Exit tickets are not intended to be summative in nature. Nor are they a high-stakes
test or assessment. Rather, they are a short informal assessments, surveys, or
tasks, usually 2 — 5 questions in length that students complete before they leave the
classroom. They usually take no longer than a few minutes. Typically, they are used
by teachers as a form of formative assessment to check the level of student

and ideas captured for feeding great content into the strategic
planning process.

Misconception check is a type of formative assessment. It is
meant to see if students, when given a false fact, can identify
