BASIC KEYBOARDING SKILLS UNIT 2  Presented by Jennifer Firat

OBJECTIVE At the end of the unit, the Students should be able to: Attain and maintain accuracy and speed. Proper positioning of hands and fingers on the keyboard.

COVERED TOPIC TOPICS Unit 2.1 - Typing Ergonomics Unit 2.2 - Positioning of fingers on the keyboard

LET'S TEST YOUR KEYBOARDING SKILL WARM UP Visit https://www.typing.com/student/lesson/359/j-f-and-space and start typing using different fingers except the index fingers on left and right hand and the thumbs.

SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE HOW WAS THE EXERCISE?

Typing Ergonomics Unit 2.1

ERGONOMICS? A logistic support for efficient and effective typewriting. Important to attain and maintain accuracy and speed. Ergonomics means the study of people’s efficiency in their working environment. Ergonomics helps harmonize things that interact with people in terms of people’s needs, abilities and limitations. Efficient means achieving more with a minimum waster effort or expenses. Effective means successful in producing a desired or intended result.

SITTING POSTURE MOUSE AND KEYBOARD PLACEMENT POSITION OF HANDS CHAIR AND TABLE PLACEMENT FACTORS IN TYPING ERGONOMICS MONITOR PLACEMENT PLACEMENT of matter to be typed

SITTING POSTURE Sit straight, slightly bending your neck forward while operating the computer keyboard. Check your comfort and sitting position of body. Touch the lower portion of your back to the lower portion of the back rest of the chair Touch both the feet to the floor.

POSITION OF HANDS Put your forearms at level with the keyboard and palms down as shown on the photo. Keep your wrists straight and hang your elbows naturally. Don't touch the elbows to the body nor be too far away from the body Bend at about a 90 degree angle.

Do not bend your neck while working on the monitor. Keep the upper border of screen at eye level. Distance of screen from the user depends on the size of monitor. For 17 inches screen, keep the distance about 60 – 65 cms. MONITOR PLACEMENT

MOUSE AND KEYBOARD PLACEMENT Keep the keyboard and mouse together at an approximate distance of 20 cms.   Same height of keyboard, mouse and elbows helps the users to work comfortably.

CHAIR AND TABLE PLACEMENT Adjust computer chair and table at an optimal height. The chair must be supportive to the lower back of the user. Keyboard and vibrating devices, such as printers should be on a separate table. Table must have a sufficient space for your legs.

PLACEMENT OF MATTER TO BE TYPED Place the things to be typed on the left or right side of the keyboard. Put on a Copy holder which has a sloping surface.

UNIT 2.2 Positioning of Fingers on the Keyboard Presented by Jennifer Firat

As typing is equivalent to pen or pencil nowadays, mastery of computer keyboard has become obvious.   Before we proceed on the proper positioning of fingers, let us discuss the important keys where your fingers touched the most.

Alphabets ASDF are home keys for the left hand and ; (semi-colon) LKJ for the right hand.   Fingers are trained to make the correct movement to other keys and each finger returns immediately to its respective home key after it has depressed the corresponding key in any other row. HOME KEYS

Guide Keys Keys ‘ F ’ and ‘ J ’ are called guide keys for left and right hand.  Both contain a tangible mark with the help of which touch typist can place the fingers correctly.

Mastery typewriting skills mean to attain necessary knowledge and skill of keyboard operation by correct positioning of fingers.

1. Starts from the second row (Home Row) 2. Followed by Third Row (Upper Row) Allocation of Keys to Fingers 3. Next First Row (Bottom Row) 4. Last Fourth Row (Number Row)

HOME ROW APPROACH Also called Horizontal Approach, all the eight fingers of both the hands rest on Home Keys (A, S, D, F, J, K, L, and ;. The thumb of the right hand is used to operate the Space Bar.

Type the following in double line spacing to get perfection over the Home Row. Students must type as many rows as they can in 3 minutes. No using of Copy and Paste commands. Alternative exercise is to put a blindfold to each student while typing the letters. (Blind Typing method) PRACTICE 01 Instructions: ∞ Do not look at the keyboard. ∞ Each letter should come beneath the other. ∞ Concentrate your mind on the text ∞ Typing should be done quite accurately with constant rhythm ∞ Repeat this process until mastery over this exercise.
